Previous Post - Endurance - Beginning of this journey

I have started the build of the Endurance from Occre more than a month back but this is the first build log. At this point my hull is almost complete but I would like to cover my journey upto this point.

Since this was my first ever build, I had no idea what to expect. I have some craftsmanship skills and do some basic carpentry and craft but never tried my hand on model build. Obviously I had to start with some caution. All the way from separating the pre-cut parts to build the skeleton to planking and painting, everything was a "first time". I had seen the Occre - Endurance build video on youtube multiple times and that has been mighty helpful. But the combination of the video, the paper instructions and your own intuition are together a pretty safe way to start building.

I bought some basic model tools from amazon like forceps, cutters, sandpaper, some wood and instant glue and thought these would be enough. But ha! I have done numerous trips to Walmart and Homedepot to get so many more tools that I have lost count of. I ordered the paint set along with the kit and thought that it should be good enough but more on that later.

I started with cutting of the main frame pieces and building it to form the main skeleton of the ship. Tried to get each bulkhead perfectly perpendicular to the center piece. Not very difficult., but needs patience to wait until the wood glue dries. Then came the deck and the planking. The Occre video suggested use of contact cement and I had no idea how to use it so I used wood glue instead. Worked quite well but later I would know the advantage of contact cement. cut the planks according to the shape. I mad a mistake to cut one piece along with the slits to attach the frame and later realized that I still should trimmed the plan it along the main shape and leave the slits as they are. But I have tried to cover it by as much as I could. The attached the decks to the frame and the shape looked pretty good!

Why they would recommend contact cement is a mystery to many model ship builders. You were very wise to go to a wood glue as it is more forgiving when applying the planking and is made to be used for wood. It provides a stronger bond that penetrates the wood fibers better than contact cement.

Thank you : ) it is my first build.
There are a lot of alterations you can make to be more true to the ship but the one in particular early on in the build is the lifeboat posts in the center. On the actual they are positioned on the inside not the outside as shown in the photo attached. The holes drilled to put the metal attachments might be easier to drill out before you put anything inside and before you put the final planking on the outside ( I had to drill through the finished hull and repair the hole on the exterior)... also the metal attachments need to be twisted in the other direction then for the new hole position. I heated them up while in a vice and slowly twisted them to the new position. If you do this, make sure they are redish hot before you slow twist... I snapped one and had to repair it... If you're not comfortable doing this just put them on the outside... still looks cool even with the posts outside.
