Hello,

First time posting, second attempt at a wooden ship so please be kind. I really would love to get tips or advices.
Anyway, so this is my second ship. I am building it from the kit as is, I do not do a research of it for historical accuracies, I just want to build it to look decent, to learn for future projects.
Here are some photos:

the kit arrived like this

this is where I'm at right now, started rigging, hope you like it!

Welcome to the forum.

Great looking work for your second ship. Keep up the good work and if you need help, post photos and questions here and the grand folks will provide help if available.

For your next project please start a new build log and we can keep up at each step and advise if you run into problems.

Use the search tool for check for the kit ships name and see if others have posted build logs and what they did or if they had issues and how they fixed them.

thank you all for the warm welcome.
I found this forum quite recently by researching Montanes by occre. And I found a lot of other good topics and tips here so I decided to join.

I knew that black friday is coming and my birth day was near so I bought myself a present...IMG20241203172759.webp

what can I say... I built amati Lady nelson (first wooden ship) then last year I bought the Essex (current build) and Corsair (next in line) (black friday again) and none of those models scared me, also I got them for like really cheap... (-50%) but this... this thing scares me :) , I think it will stay in my shelf for a long long time until I will feel that I can take up this challenge.

Back to the topic.
So as I mentioned I am a begginer, I do not have any special tools for wooden models (but I do have a bunch for plastic ones). To cut the thin strips of wood I am using a thin and sharp single blade nippers like this:
1733295972261.png
I find them really good to use, it is fast to cut, but you have to be carefull to cut it straight if I'm cutting bigger ones... really speeds up the process for me For bigger strips (blocks or what you call them...) I use a mini saw that I usually cut resin with.
1733296539890.png1733296554882.png

It came with other saw options (I use the bigger one) and I find it fine, especialy when there are hard placed to access, it bends quite nicely but sometimes would like to get one with bigger teeth so that it would cut better.

and that is it. I do not have pliers for metal bending ( I saw one that make a round bend by just pressing them down in a shape of some sorts) And I am considering getting some other tools.

For glue I use Herkules Expert. It's like PVA or other wood glue, but the curing time is really fast (or i think it is) when I was planking the hull for second time (I do not know how it is called, my knowledge is limited but the I called it planking with fine looking wood?) I only used this and some pressure from my fingers and I did not need any CA (well maybe a few times) it stuck almost Imediately while carefully pressing and brushing my fingers along the planks.

I also have amati Pin pusher, I wanted to know is there any pin pushers that have a magnet in the bottom so the nails would not fall out?

Now I really do not like the given blocks of occre, dead eyes and etc. They look poorly made... In the future I might buy them seperately... I do not like them also because they do not soak the stains I use.
Speaking about the stains and paint, I use Tamiya panel line brown for the masts. Paint Ammo mig Atom, other stains are from various Ammo mig filters, streaking effects and washes. Laquer I use a spray can...

I did buy amati treads, that I like better, they look like they are pre-waxed? I also bought beeswax, but did not try to use it yet, but I will soon...

I will post more updates on the ship when I will make some progress, but having not enough time (who does right? :) ) and two children I just can't do as much as I want. But I am happy that my kids like the stuff I do and want to help, thats it for now, thank you again :)

Thank, you :) you got me confused there for a moment :) Translate doesn't work good with my language it says: Welcome to the ship SOS.
Thank you all for the welcome again.
Welcome aboard !
Nice work Savas
I’m building the same ship, just finished the deck. First wooden ship for me
Yeah I saw your progress, keep it going!

Now I didn't do much in the week, did some random rigging, I found a mistakes on the instructions (thankfully the videos on youtube helped.) I wanted to tie the masts a bit, and I could not find the right tie post. The front mast tie post was shown to be done in the middle, glad I though bullsh*t and checked youtube build, and yeah... just wrong numbers on the plan... I started on the bow and ratlines. Learned the correct way to do them, and in the end I got some speed doing it but there are still 5 to go, probably the most boring rigging but the most visible... Also tried beeswax, and yeah, it is worth it, just makes the tread look a lot nicer. I will probably post again when I will finish with the ratlines

Hi,

Well, since I am mainly a plastic model kit builder, I have tons of premade stuff that is used for different purposes, but does wonders for wood.
I don't remember which product exactly it was, but it was one of these:
5a02fc64-68b4-4fb5-9f26-cd6579f0c9d2.jpg

I remember that for the masts I used the "Tamiya panel line brown". For darker places like the structures roofs, I used the "Ammo Mig Tracks wash" or it was "Ammo mig Dark brown wash for green vehicles"., I might have used the "Ammo Mig brown for white filter" for the deck but it was really long time ago. I got the products from https://www.modeliukai.lt/en (for europe). I like the products because I just dip the paintbrush and paint, no need to play with dilution or other stuff, also - no odors.

Hope it helps

yes, thank you :)

I can tell you are a purist! Lovely job and nice that you share it with the forum. I think you have found your hobby. Happy days!!

Thank you all again for the welcome.
As promised, I just did the first ratlines. Still a lot more to go (the second level?) If any of you spot something I should be doing in a different way than the instructions, please tell me and show me how I would really appreaciate that, I am doing the model by the book, I have no knowledge on how it should be in reality, so everything would help me, thank you in advance.
