Fair American from Model Shipways

Back again. I'm moving along with the Fair one. Planked the transom, as you can see and did some painting. I've decided to stick with the deck furniture the kit offers. I can deal with the gun carriages and the pumps. Just don't think this one's worth spending the $50.00 for guns, and on and on. I'm including a shot of one of the whale boats I've built. I grew up across from the Sag Harbor Whaling Museum and that boat was one of my playgrounds so I have a warm feeling around them. If you are OK with 3D printed resin guns give them some consideration. I last paid $15 for 20 of them, including shipping. It has been a year or more so the prices may have changed. I just email the 3D drawing of the gun pattern and scale I want to the fellow that does the printing and voila, the barrels show up a week or two later. If you do not have the 3D drawings I have drawings of the eight English patterns between 1625 and the early 19th century if one of them is close to what would be on the Fair American that I can send you.

Love your whale boat!

Thanks for all the positive reviews!

Allan, I'm a bit away from the guns but I'm still thinking I'll use the ones in the kit. This doesn't mean I wouldn't want to take a look at the 3D resin ones for future projects. I've built a lot of resin kits in other projects and love the detail they have. A few of the manufacturers, actually artists, who create them are in the Ukraine and it's great to support them. I'd love to take a look at the drawings and the link to your manufacturer. Thanks again.

Hi Truc
There is no link. I worked with another ship modeler and put together a set of 2D drawings of English and a few Spanish cannon. He used these to render 3D drawings which we have on file. When you have a need, please feel free to PM me with your email address and I can email you the drawings of the pattern and caliber you want as well as the email address of the printer I use here in the US. I am sure there are plenty more print shops from which to choose and maybe one local to you.

Hatch covers: Gratings seem to have become a modeling convention for these old time sailing vessels, and they certainly can be a way to showcase one’s craftsmanship.

However! On a real sailing vessel, especially one with low freeboard relative say to a ship of the line, hatches would be secured whenever there was risk of boarding seas. I’m not an expert on ships of this period but it’s safe to say that the gratings would probably be removed and replaced with a solid wood cover.

I’d replace the kit supplied cover with another solid wooden one

I agree Roger. I purposely didn't glue both hatches in to allow myself the option of making one or the other. I'll go with the solid wood.

I'm back. I don't know what keeps me so busy but there you are. Anyway, I have been decking the ship while I was gone. Or you were gone. One of us was gone. The main deck still has finish work but I wanted to jump up to the quarter deck and thought it would be fun to make a jig to taper the wood. And so, here's what it all looks like. Not sure if I'll tree nail or what. I think my enthusiasm is waning. The wood splits, the blade wanders and my mind does the same. Don't worry, fellow salts, I'll come around.IMG_2788.JPGIMG_2795.JPGIMG_2798.JPG

I've been waylaid. Fell and damaged my back, right after having congratulated myself at reaching 80. So I apologize for leaving the hundreds of you at the edge of your seats. But now, you see, I'm having a wale of a time.IMG_3509.JPGIMG_3513.JPGIMG_3511.JPG

I'm enjoying watching your progress. I just ordered Bob Hunt's practicum for the Fair American while it's on sale and think I will have to do this one in the near future. I bought this kit some time back around 1993 and got as far as adding the bulkheads to the keel. Ended up hauling the incomplete kit around through seven moves between three different countries before I decided I was never going to complete it and then binned the carcass while cleaning out for the last move. Have been using the rest of the kit for kit-bashing other builds.
