This is my first post. I'm glad I found this forum. I have started the Occre Mississippi paddle wheeler. There will be a lot of questions along the way. For starters the instructions say to use contact cement or cobblers glue to attach the planking. I have always used Elmer's glue. Which is it? Seems like cc or cg would make a mess and not last.

The beginners thread is not accessible to me. Why, and how do I get access?

Finally, where will this post?

Thanks

also from my side a warm welcome here on board of our forum

You should have access to all areas in the forum

JD, Welcome! I have to classify myself as a pretty new modeler as well, although I’ve been lurking around SoS for a few years now.

I can’t answer all your questions, but I will offer my opinion on the glue for planking. The issue with contact cement is you don’t really get the option to adjust placement—once you lay your plank, that’s where it’s going to stay. I’ve been using PVA (white/Elmers) for planking. Apply a bit at a time as you go along and then use a plank bender or other heat source to bend the plank into place and set the glue. I have books that recommend using CA glue (super glue) at intervals to hold things in place until the PVA sets, but I’ve had limited success with CA. My $0.02. Other modelers will have their own prefered methods.

Welcome to the forums !
I agree with the above. Contact cement makes a mess often because it gets stringy. Use a PVA glue like titebond. I usually transfer some to a smaller bottle that is easier to handle and has a finer application tip. I get the smaller empty bottles from Amazon.

Usually I use a brush for PVA, but your point is spot on—must be able to control where and how much glue gets applied, especially if you plan on staining or natural finish. Most any glue will affect how the wood absorbs the finish.

Bienvenido al foro. Y a disfrutar que es un buen kit.

Hi JD
Can you post photos in a build log? Looks like a lovely model.
