Hi, I have severe CA glue allergies. While using CA for a few hours my nose starts to run. It runs more and more severe so I am not able to sleep. Then I become flue like sick for a few days. I was at the point of completely dropping to use CA. It is however not efficient to work on rigging unless using a CA. So I kept trying different brands and reading about CA glues. Finally I learned of existence of ORDORLESS CA glues. They are rare and expensive but I tried the STARBOND THIN ORDORLESS. To my surprise it did work for me. I work with it about 6 months and no allergies. Glue also has different and useful properties. It does not dry instantly as all other types. It remains flexible after it solidifies - great and rare property for CA. I use home made applicators made out of paper clips wire. Just cut a small slot on the wire tip with a jeweler's saw. See picture. I made many of them. When they get contaminated, and this happens very quickly, I drop them into a small jar with some pure acetone. Acetone dissolves and cleans my applicators. I made up a CA bottle holder from wood which holder prevents overturning of the bottle - very important accessory!

A couple of years ago, I got frustrated with the gummed up nozzle of a bottle of CA, unscrewed the top and wound up spilling the bottle down a pair of pants. Very early the next AM I woke up with my sinuses badly swollen. Having trouble breathing I wound up in the ER. As a result, I almost never use it.

Replacement? Cleat nitrocellulose lacquer based nail polish. It’s ideal for rigging. It also works well for securing tiny things inserted into drilled holes like hatch ringbolts.

I just go to my local drug store and look through the cosmetics. They usually have rows of nail polishes with a few clear ones. I read the ingredients on the bottle looking for nitrocellulose. I’m not where I have access to my shop but will post the specific brand later.

Thank you Roger. I found it. Problem is the curing time is at least 20 minutes. This is hardly acceptable. It will take me forever to do rigging which I already very very slow with.

I have never found curing time to be a problem. This material cures via evaporation of the vehicle (the thinner) leaving a cellulose deposit. The vehicle is a very volatile fluid; usually acetone. When used in small drops like on rigging knots, it grabs almost instantly.

Applied to ladies fingernails, this is a different matter as once the polish dries, it is not necessarily hard and of course fingernails are there to protect the ends of fingers so they take a beating. When my wife gets a manicure, she has me pick her up to avoid smearing her nails.

I had the same rhinitis problem with CA glue, but the odourless Roket brand available in the uk was perfect for me. It has to be the odourless one as other versions of this make are still problematic. Also I use the long polythene pipettes which are again available from amazon which allow precision and can be trimmed several times when the tip blocks

Hello,
I read the topic with great attention because for some time (in fact a good year) I have been suffering from the same symptoms as those you describe (powerful rhinitis with significant discharge, red eyes and repeated sneezing) and I did not dare to consider the fact that I am allergic to one of the products of my daily passion (I am retired).
I will try to get this glue that you mentioned and see what it gives. I will keep you informed.
Many thanks for your information.

Dilute to 30% or 50%. dries in minutes. Use same diluent to undo any knots which need adjusting within secs. Used this method for 30 years without any problems.

I place a sewing needle on the side of a dowel, taped with gaff tape. (One could also drill a hole for the needle) to use for glue. If I am using superglue, when the needle gets clogged, just burn it off.

Sometimes I just clip the tip of the needle's eye to leve the "u" shape to grab the glue. Different sized needles can be used for the different sized eyes.

Blessings!

By the way for those who doesn’t like the shininess of CA on their ropes, apply some acetone on shiny spots. Acetone dissolves CA and remove shiny surfaces.
Yes, Starbond is a good solution. The biggest downside is that is it very thin and tends to flow where you don't necessarily want it. Acetone is essential! Also the block to prevent the bottle from tipping is very important. My understanding is that Starbond is CA but they've taken out some of the nasties to make it non allergenic. I find that if I use it for a long time without a fan or mask, I get some mild sinus irritation.
