French war-ship Saint-Philippe 1693 - scale 1/72 - from Lemineur monograph

Usually the lids are appr. 30° up the horizontal, not much higher.
This angle is defined by the maximum possible angle caused and defined by the rope for opening the lid, and here most the location of the hole in the hull through which the rope is going. Technically it will be not possible to open the lid more than shown in the sketches

so!?! Wher is your hole and how could be the running of the lid´s rope (do not know in moment the correct english term)
 
I just checked the conetnt of the planset of the Saint Philippe.
The decks are high enough, so that the rope for the lids can be installed relatively high.
and you have several cross sections shown with the lids open - so you have all necessary information there
