Good afternoon everybody

It’s now 17:50 in the Netherlands and starting with my first build log.
I must say I hesitated quite a while before starting this log. I think it was a case of pre-show jitters. But the encouragements from amongst others Peter Voogt and Herman did the trick.

The Golden Hind is my first wooden model and I started it several months ago. So long before I discovered the SOS site. Below you can find some pictures I made during those months.

Presently I’m finishing the second planking. And I can’t say that it was my thing.
The first attempt was rather disappointing. It resulted in me peeling of some planks with a sharp chisel. Contact glue seems to be quite a challenge. BTW: Does anybody know a good and less smelly alternative?

The second attempt seems to look a bit better. And with the great help of the support department of Occre I have enought planks to finish.
See the last 2 pictures. I hope you agree.

Hello everybody,
Hope to complete the second planking tomorrow. And now thinking about the next steps.
One of the things I would like to avoid the use of the paper strips on the sides (striping) and on the stern ("the image of a hind")

For the striping I'm think of using my air brush to paint them. For the stern I don't have an idea yet

Does anybody have any suggestions?

Ron, While I do not know the quality of the Occre strips, I had the same reservations when building Mamoli's Roter Lowe. I eventually used the paper, figuring I could remove it if I didn't like it, and was surprised at how well it looked. For other sections, where the build called for diagonal stripes, I used alternating strips of painted wood. In his magnificent Mary Rose build, Graham used home-made decals for some of his decorations.

Hi Ron,
Just like you I am even more of a beginner, I have started on the OcCre Polaris. I uses the same method of planking as yours, hardly surprising when its from the same manufacturer. My first layer planking had quite a few problems and I am almost ready to start the second layer of planking which is the same veneer type dark wood as yours. I have not found it easy but have had help from quite a few on here. The OcCre videos via YouTube show them using super glue which sticks almost instantly, but the members here say I should use CA glue which is white and takes about twenty minutes to go off.
If you check out “Pins for Planking” which is my header title, you will see the many things people posted like vid links, books, and online reading material. There is a good YouTube video from a known expert “ Chuck Pissaro” who builds the boats but does not use the pins that OcCre use in their vids and their instructions.
There is a lot of very useful info there.
Oh, nearly forgot, your build is looking very good, you should be proud of yourself

Hi Stevinne, thanks good tip. I will start with the paper strips and see how it goes.

Hi Dennis, good advice. I'm almost completed the second planking. But working with contact glue is a real challenge. I'm very curious about your experiences with the CA glue. Here is a photo showing how far I've come

Hi all, back in town. As mentioned when I introduced myself to the forum, I'm approaching retirement. But not there yet. So I was quiet busy with my work last weeks. But managed now to complete the second planking. Hopefully more time to spend upcoming weeks.

Hello everyone,

I’m about to begin painting the hull of my model. I plan to use "satin varnish" on one section and "dark brown" on another, both of which are from Occre.

What I'm unsure about is whether it's still possible to use PVA glue to attach additional parts to the painted areas of the hull. Has anyone had experience with this or can offer some advice?
