Starting a new kit the gorch fock by mantua. Doing an unboxing of this kit, definitely seems of better quality than the lynx. Big sheet of photoetched parts. This will be the biggest ship I have done so far. 3 sheet of plans that are printed front and back. Already started to dry fit the bulkheads to the frame. 20220903_191609.jpg20220903_191716.jpg20220903_191804.jpg20220903_191929.jpg20220903_192025.jpg20220903_192138.jpg20220903_192241.jpg20220903_192356.jpg20220903_192412.jpg20220903_192449.jpg20220903_192513.jpg20220903_192601.jpg20220903_192623.jpg20220903_193856.jpg20220903_194546.jpg

Managed to get the rest of the bulk heads cut out and dry fitted them glued I'm place. One thing I really do like about the mantua brand is they make a brace or middle section that goes inside the bulkheads to keep the square so no need to break out the legos on this build. Got the main deck and the decor for the stern glued and nailed. Gonna let them dry over night then pull nails tomorrow and might start putting the decking on. Got one of the deck cabins built aswell. She is definitely a big ole girl.

Even talked with the kisses and I probably going to sell some of my other models that I have built since now I'm running out of room. 20220904_224725.jpg20220904_224729.jpg20220904_224738.jpg20220904_224809.jpg20220904_224816.jpg

slightly off topic here, but maybe you and / or others are interested in the last history of the Gorch Fock with the (financial) desaster of the last renovation
But now she is like new....

Now looking at it has me torn between painting with the green bottom or the red bottom

Have gotten a little bit done after work in the mornings. Still working on getting the deck planking laid down but have gotten enough to finally get the fore deck at the bow of the ship placed. I'll have to get the cabin that goes on the main deck on and under that over hang for the fore deck in place before I can put any planks on. 20220908_063859.jpg20220908_063903.jpg20220908_063910.jpg

Looks bigger. No doubt FEELS bigger, to you. I think it's the shorter bowsprit that makes the hull larger in proportion. Should be a very impressive model!
I was looking at the plans and yes it seems odd that the bowspirte is so short for a ship this size.

I built the Revell/Heller plastic kit a couple of yrs. ago, & thought the same thing about the bowsprit. It does look strange, but after reading everything I could find about her, never did find why this was so! Can't wait to see how your masterpiece turns out! rick1011

For one, the bowsprit doesn't have a sail on it, so doesn't need that extra length, and its length would be a function of the foremast height. I think this is just a long ship, with shorter masts (957mm length vs 457mm high, compared to earlier sailing ships with length and height close to the same), built for training rather than cargo or war, so does not require the longer bowsprit earlier ships would. My comment was mostly that while the length of the model is not huge, the hull is quite big considering that length.

Makes sense

I'm pretty sure I saw that kit on FB Marketplace too. Would have gotten it, but I already have more models than I can finish in a lifetime (I'm almost 82). I would have converted it to the USCGC "Eagle", which would be a simple matter since they are sister ships. "Eagle" started out as the "Horst Wessel". I have the Constructo "Eagle", but the one you are building looks like a better kit. I'll be watching your progress.
