This was my last finished scratch build. I saw a drawing of this in a brochure called Flagship Portsmouth and thought what a wonderful complicated project it would be. Enjoyable was the planning! plans of each deck, materials needed, how to build etc etc. The model is approx 150 cms long and I had to construct it as a see through model from port to starboard so partitions, say like the carpenters walk had be upright beams only. The positioning of the deck main beams, carlings and upright supports were difficult to get in exact placings, so a few mistakes were made. It taught me a lot how clever the shipbuilders and designers were so long ago, especially with the parts to make the ship a bit healthier and workable. I look at it on my display unit and see the power of it's guns and every deck different. I hope you enjoy it and one last thing, I made a big mistake which I could rectify easily but left it it for honesty. Who can spot it? Paul006.jpg004.jpg005.jpg
 
I was trying to find the mistake, but I can only assume, due to the fact, that I am not specialist of the Victory......
Maybe two possibilities, which you mean:
The bowsprit foundation:

or is it the anchor cable storage room, which should be in the main hold, means one level lower

BTW: Great Idea and execution with this longitudinal section Thumbs-Up

Thanks for the interest, it's not the bowsprit although it may not be right and the cable tier storage room is on the correct Orlop deck, so the anchor cables went up and along the Lower Gun Deck. I wont say what my bad mistake was yet as it's early days, one hint, it's blatant but not obvious. Thanks for your thinking about it. Paul

First thanks for this beautiful model. This is, for me the first time that I can appreciate this kind of model and the first that I see one of relevant precision!!!
I am not a specialist of the H.M.S. Victory though I visited her in the 70ies and I built (yet unfinished) a model based on the books of J. McKay and C. Nepean Longridge (scale 1:96). As I assume that your model is at scale 1:48 or 1:50 (you mention 150cm) I would have liked some more details on the guns such as their accessories, different sizes and/or fittings. But this does not diminish the "professional" work you performed. Just for fun I attach a picture of one of the 12 pdr long guns with fittings of my model (scale 1:96 not yet installed!!!)

G'day Paul, I think it is a fantastic model, you have put a lot of hours into her, and I wouldn't want to diminish your work by suggesting anything was wrong, we all miss something but I think that in this case I just love to look at what you have created and enjoy her, she is amazing,

Hi Denis,
What a pleasant reply and pleased you enjoyed my model. I bought a book called 100 gun ship Victory by John McKay, such a wonderful book with plans, drawings and photos of the ship, I cut it up and had about 75 plans made enlarged 4 times as big, which was 1/192 which became 1/48 as you taught me. You learn something new every day. I learnt many years ago the most important thing about building model ships, whether kits or scratch build is think A before B. I bought 3 or 4 different gun barrels in brass as each deck had different sizes 32 - 12 pounders. I then made moulds and cast them in resin, another thing I'm not very good at and just cut of the recoil ropes as they had nowhere to go. I realised I could not see all the work I done so now I am building each deck separately which I will start downloading next month. Your 12 pounder is excellent and should be installed. Paul

Nice to hear from you, yes did enjoy making this model, maybe my most difficult but had great fun planning and thinking with it, glad you like, will say the mistake in a couple of weeks. Now have you looked at 2 Ozy blocks from Heathmont who built a 95kg model of the Victory with movable sides, lights and moving sails.! When I was planning my model I saw this and we sent an e-mail to each other. Have a look at www.hmsvictory.com.au enjoy it and let me know what you think. Paul

I think one day when I get too old, I would like to donate this model to say a maritime museum, not for the work involved but for folks to see how complicated a ship was many years ago before computers and robots etc. and how clever they were. Paul
 
This is fantastic Paul. My digital Project might be complex but I think what you have done here is far more demanding than what I am embarking upon. I am in awe.

Thanks for the reply, you are probably right but the bad mistake was I have left a space between cannons on the lower gun deck for the entry port to board the ship but it should have been above on the middle gun deck. The port side is correct which cannot be seen. I just wanted show that we all make mistakes. Enjoy the hobby. Paul

No it was not an easy one, if it had been on a normal Victory model I would have been sent to The Tower over here! Paul
 
Without the outer hull that is a tough one to catch, besides anyone would be distracted by your amazing detail. I must admit that I am torn between your side view and the individual decks, what is next, cross sections?
 
No when I'm finished I will burn all the plans of HMS Victory, must create something new and original
