Hello SOS. My name is Ken Ewings aka Bob - from the UK. This is to let the forum know about a website dedicated to my Father - Hal Ewings - a scale ship model maker. You can view the site at http://hal-ewings.simplesite.com/. Please check out the model ships section, and there may be other bits of the site that are of interest to some. Kene

Hello Kene,
I knew your father very well, he was a member of my local ship model club, Northwest Model Shipwrights. I have posted images of some of his models here.
Sadly, there is little interest in the type of ships that your father and myself built (Merchant ships), and I have become very disillusioned over the past year or so!
All my efforts to get modelmakers interested have failed completely. See my section here: http://www.shipsofscale.com/phpBB3/viewforum.php?f=78
Like a ghost town!
Like Hal, I was a Merchant Navy radio officer for many years!
Here is a link to some of his models that I put here on SOS:

Dear Bob,
I was extremely pleased to read your reply and your earlier postings particularly ones that reference my Father and his models. You are Bob - my Father used to speak about you and was extremely respectful of your technical and engineering skills. He used to speak about the detail and accuracy of your minature model ships.

Why, I wonder, are model merchant ships unfashionable? Is it because they dont tend to have guns? Are passenger ships and liners also out of vogue? Are model U-boats and submarines popular?

I enjoyed looking through your website and at the pictures of your models.

Your photographs of a couple of my Father's modelss are of great interst to me - I have never seen the one of the diorama before. Do I have your permission to include them in my Fathers' website, propery acknowledges of course? I also plan to include a link to your weebsite, is that okay?

Is the Association still running? Does it still meet at Chorley?

Best wishes

Ken

Hi Ken,
Thanks for reply. Yes, by all means, use the photographs and link as you wish. I think most model makers are stuck in Napoleonic times, and there has never been a great deal of interest in building model merchant ships, although tugs and coasters are popular with radio control, submarines as well. Collectors, on the other hand, can't get enough of them. I didn't know Hal did painting as well, and was very impressed by the industrial north paintings where the figures are far more natural than Lowry's efforts. The club still meets monthly, but it has now moved to a church hall in Grimsargh, Lancs. There is no meeting this month because the hall is booked, and the club is putting a show on at Blackpool, but our next one in November 22nd.
If you send me your e-mail via PM or contact me through my website, I will send you our last newsletter.
Two of your father's dioramas are still with the club and are exhibited from time to time. One is the one shown here and the other is a coal yard railway terminal.
Bob
