Halve Maen (Half Moon) 1:50 Corel kit [COMPLETED BUILD]

Finishing the Beakhead (Galjoen)

The drawings of the bow section are clear, the written instructions are not.

The bow section consists of

- floor pieces (64)
- railing posts (62)
- reinforcement pieces (65)

The specified amount of parts does not fit.

I secured each decorative board with one nail.

The construction of the Corel kit bow does not look like the bow of the second replica, but I do not mint.

Later this year I will visit the replica, still located in The Netherlands again. Then I will make more pictures

The rudder

I have laminated the rudder with walnut (there is not enough walnut in the kit) and painted the sides dark brown. About 2/3 Humbrol no 113, 1/3 Humbrol no 33

The wood still needs to be sanded and varnished, but it looks fine to me.

The direction of the planking of the keel and the rudder matches:

and attached, the hinges do not fit entirely but I am satisfied

The pilots house

In the Corels assembly instructions a pilots house is described as followes:

I have never seen a construction like like this, and I agree with Eric@Brewbrarian it does mot look good.

The replica’s house looks like this;

Not that beautiful either, so I opted for one of the constructions described in Erics log. I made some changes.

I made the construction by using balsa and walnut planks for the roof and alnut planks and some leftovers for the walls:

In also changed the construction under the deck. A support beam was stil visible after assembling the house

I removed this beam

and assembled a wall under the deck.

The wall is visible when you look inside the house:

Under the pilots house

When you look under the deck below the pilots House you could see some unfinished supporting structure. Heinrich described similar problems with the Batavia. I already told I made and assembled an extra Back wall. I also made two chests and placed them left and right under the house:

Components on the deck

Finally I assembled several components on the deck pretty straightforward. Contrary to the instruction I made as much components from walnut. I advice everybody to buy some extra walnut; I myself bought some extra 1x4 mm, 2x3 mm 2x5 mm and 0,6x 10 mm planks.

The deck is starting to look a bit finished now

The real thing

The pilot's house looks superb Rene. You found a great solution there and did some fine scratch-building - compliments!

No, I don't have any idea whether that is the correct terminology. That is just what I call it in English. ROTF

ROTF I am an English teacher but not an expert in English maritime terminology !!! ROTF

Assembling the chainwales

Corel advises to glue the chainwales directly on the hul with the help of a piece supporting wood. See drawing below, part no 93.

61497E2A-7BE8-41C8-BBA2-9B5322EBB624.jpeg

To my opinion this construction is not strong enough. I drilled 1 mm holes in the chainwales and in hull and assembled the chainwales with the help of 1 mm brass pins.

This is a strong connection. Much stronger than Corels design

Manufacturing the Cannons hatches

I made the cannons hatches from two layers of wallnut and one 0,6 mm of balsa wood in between. That way it will be easy to dril holes into de hatches afterwards.

Corel advises to use nails to assemble the canons hatches. I used 0,7 mm brass pins.
