I thought something similar about kits being sold in KMart in the 70s. A big display of Pocher/Tyco kits in the store at $20 to $40. I really didn't know what to think about them. The best I was hoping for were simpler kits than Pocher normally makes in the same 1`/8 scale. I had already bought the first Alfa Romeo kit for $65, and built the Fiat which I think cost more. So I ended up able to contact the purchasing agent who handled the sale of the kits, and found they were really Pocher kits made for Tyco, which offloaded them to KMart to get rid of.
I was still unsure, so took my built Fiat kit to the store and talked the manager into giving me 3 of the kits in exchange for the built Fiat, to show the level of detail of these kits. I felt they'd have a rough time selling kits that expensive at KMart without an example of their quality. I also bought the Rolls Royce, giving me the Alfa racer, the Alfa with fenders, the Fiat and the Rolls.
By the time I got them home and realized they were fantastic, first-rate Pocher kits, I went back to the store to buy some for investment purposes, but they were all gone. Due no doubt to my completed Fiat, which was no longer there either.
