Hello everyone, and Happy New Year!

I'm Gustavo from Barcelona. I've been on the forum for a while, but this is my first post.

I started my journey during the pandemic. With so much free time, I looked for ways to keep myself occupied and decided to build a ship model. Without seeking any information (it didn't even occur to me!), I bought the kit for the French training ship Belem by Artesanía Latina. I must say it was quite a challenge, as it's not a kit recommended for beginners. Although the result was somewhat disastrous, I finished it, learned a lot, and got hooked on this hobby.

After that, I looked for an easier kit and bought La Niña by Artesanía Latina. With my previous experience, this one was as easy as pie. Nine months ago, I started working on the Santa María by Artesanía Latina, which I'm now close to finishing. And here's my question:

I have the sails in place, but I don't like how they look. I want them to appear as if they are filled with wind. I've found information suggesting that mixing white glue and water in a 1:1 ratio and soaking the sails with this solution can help shape them. However, I'm worried that this method might smudge the red cross I painted in the center of the sails. Do you know of any other options?

Thanks in advance, and best regards.

¿Conocen otras opciones?

Gracias de antemano y un cordial saludo.

If you want to try to shape the ones that are rigged you can try using small diameter wire, but if the sails are in place shaping may be pulling on the rigging if the buntlines, leeches, braces, etc, are already in place. You might want to consider removing them and pre-shape them then re-rig them.

Thank you very much, Allan, for your prompt response and excellent solution. I see it as a very good practice, and I'll follow your advice.

I started my journey during the pandemic. With so much free time, I looked for ways to keep myself busy and decided to build a ship model. Without looking for information (it didn't even occur to me!), I bought the kit of the French training ship Belem from Artesania Latina. I must say that it was quite a challenge, since it is not a kit recommended for beginners. Although the result was somewhat disastrous, I finished it, learned a lot and got hooked on this hobby.

After that, I looked for an easier kit and bought La Niña from Artesania Latina. With my previous experience, this one was a piece of cake. Nine months ago, I started working on the Santa Maria from Artesania Latina, which I am now close to finishing.
And here is my question:
I have the sails up, but I don't like the way they look. I want them to look like they are filled with wind. I have found information suggesting that mixing white glue and water in a 1:1 ratio and soaking the sails in this solution can help shape them. However, I am concerned that this method may smear the red cross I painted in the center of the sails. Do you know of any other options?

Thank you in advance and best regards.
Flat sails on a model never looked good to me. In order to make billowed sails, you should choose a fabric which can stretch. You stretch the sail, wet it with starch, then let it dry, then fit it on the model. The technique shown in the video below is what I used to make sails.

Thank you very much, Darvis, for your advice.

I have been exploring your thread about the construction of La Couronne, and I find the technique you used to be amazing and the result perfect.
By the way, regarding the lighting of La Couronne, what did you use the Arduino module for?

Welcome to this useful forum. . I find that applying a fabric stiffener or hairspray (unscented!) to sails after fitting then giving them a blow with a hair dryer will improve the way they hang.

Thank you, John.

I thought about using hairspray, but I'm concerned that the sails might yellow over time.

The Arduino was used to flicker the lights. Each of the six lighting circuits flickers a tiny bit, each on a different, random frequency.
