Hello SOS Members!

Thank you for the opportunity to join this group. I am a retired engineer (nuclear and fossil power industry), age 74, and now attempting my first build with the Amati HMS Vanguard 1787. I have had a little experience with a partial build of Billings Boats Cutty Sark over 45 years ago but never completed because of work and raising a family. I know some will say that the Amati HMS Vanguard is too difficult for a first build, but I am willing to take my time, do research and hope to receive valuable tips from SOS members.

I have started the kit and have partially built the frame. I am thinking ahead and have a few questions. When it comes to paints does anyone have a preference for acrylic or enamel paints and in particular Humbrol paints which are recommended in the kit's instructions. I would like the paints to be as historically correct as possible. Also, since I am new to the SOS website could someone point me to the location for tips on planking and rigging?

Thanks in advance for any replies,

Andre

Dear Andre
welcome aboard Thumbsup :)
It is never too late to start a hobby that provides satisfaction and enjoyment. Personally I prefer acrylic paint, I do at least 2 coats and even three.
Good luck with the model, I believe it is not a shame to aim high in life, this is how quality goals are fulfilled.

Welcome aboard SOS, ADoyon. We are happy to have you with us! Frankly, I cannot help you to choose the best\corect paint because simply I don't use paint on my models, I am ashamed, but I don't know how to paint. However, we have many modelers who do paint professionally (including weathering) and they will answer your question in no time.
We recommend opening a build log, the current state of the model will suffice, for sure. This is far the best way to interact with SOS members. You have a question, we got an answer (remember RadioShack?). Think about it...
For now, below few build logs of Amati's HMS Vanguard 1787 from our members. It might a great help to you.

Happy New Year and new modeling!

Welcome, feel free to start a building log, greetings from Norway

Hallo Andre
sending you a warm welcome here on board of our forum.
A very interesting project you started - would be very good, if you follow the advise by Jim and start a building log

Thank you for the links to the Amati HMS Vanguard build logs.

Welcome Andre, nice to have you aboard. As Jimsky pointed out the build logs are invaluable resources for following along with your build. Starting your own build log is really good as well since the members can see what you are doing and provide pointers and encouragement. Enjoy your voyage. Ship-1

Thanks for your recommendation to start a build log. I believe I will need some help along the way since this is my first build and starting out with a fairly complex kit. I am not yet familiar with the SOS website. How do I start a build log and can I attach additional photos and comments to the log as I proceed?

Just go to the forum SOS build logs from kits - wood and create a new thread. Usually the title is your boat and scale and by your name. Then you just start posting comments and photos as you go. o_O Thumbsup

Hello Andre, welcome on board!
Similar to you I had a 20 years break for raising family and other hobbies.
Now I am in again.
I can recommend Schmincke gouache water based colors.
Most colors for historic ships are available.

I think there are much more water based colors for artists on the market.

Thanks for for pointing me in the right direction. I will complete a few more steps on the build then start a build log.

Thanks for your recommendation. The reason I posted the question about paints is wanting to produce the best overall look and long lasting finish. The kit recommended Humbrol paints, which I believe are enamel. From what I see on the internet, it seems that most modelers prefer acrylics. I also found a paint set made specifically for the HMS Vanguard from Cornwall Model Boats in the UK. These are water based paints. So, I have ordered a set of Humbrol paints from a USA hobby shop and the HMS Vanguard paint set from Cornwall Model Boats. I will experiment with both the enamels and acrylics to see what the colors look like and which provide the best result. I would love to hear from any members who have experience with these brands. Thanks again, Andre.
