Hello everyone!

First of all, I hope I'm in the right part of the forum.
Christmas is approaching and, knowing absolutely nothing about models, I need some advice for a present for my father, who wants to build his 1st model.
I'd like to point out that he's very handy and quite talented, especially with wood.

I tried to read a bit of the forum and my choice came down to this boat, which I think is a good match for the model he wants to build (budget around 500€):

Tools and paint :

Let me know if I've forgotten anything about the complete kit to start with and don't hesitate to correct my choices.

Best regards,

Alex.

first of all from my side a warm welcome here on board of our forum - and I hope in some weeks, we can also say hallo to your father who will be happy to get some assitance in builing his first ship model

The Endeavour kit from Occre is a good model, and when your father is talented in wood - modeling he will have a lot of fun building her
another altenrative will be also f.e. the La Hermione from Artesania Latina, a french frigate, which you know (as a french) from the port of Rochefort

or a french cutter in bigger scale

Important will be also, that your father has some basic tools .........

You will find a lot of information here in our forum

Welcome to the forums !
I totally agree with Uwek above.
However, depending on what he has worked with for wood, some of those wood working skills will not transfer over fully.
Even with woodworking experience, I would point him at possibly the Occre kit of the Polaris or Albatross for a first kit. These are more advanced kits than the raw beginner should start with. It will also give him a chance to learn some of the terminology used with ships.
Wanting to learn to drive a car and starting with an F-1 would probably yield similar results as starting with the model of the Endeavour. :)

Occre Albatross kit
Occre Polaris kit

I hope that helps !

Bonjour from l’Allier,

I would suggest a lodel that doesn’t require as much experience, such as Le Renard. I started with The Swift (Artisania Latina). It is a STEEP learning curve and the scant instructions that come with these ships requires a LOT of outside time here and with YouTube, books and hopefully modeling clubs to get it going properly. He will absolutely need to enjoy working on miniscule items, it was right up my alley as a dentist. Feel free to reach out for help, this hobby requires it.
À bientôt,
-Julie
