My name is John. I'm retired and I live on the Kent coast. I've spent several months thinking about whether I should build a POB model, and if so what it should be. I did quite a lot of research and for most of this time I really wanted to build the Victory Models HMS Fly but then I discovered the Vanguard model of Sphinx and after a quick search through this forum I bought it.

I'm not entirely new to model ship building but it's been about thirty years since my last build and I'm not entirely sure how good my previous attempts were by current standards. Given my age, HMS Sphinx might be the last wooden ship model I build, so I will try to make it perfect however long it takes.

Welcome to the forum John.
You have chosen a beautiful model to build with high standards of the manufacturer.
It would be great if you started a build log to which you can post pictures and questions as well as give you and other members a nice reference to look back on as you progress.
I for one would follow with interest as this is a kit I long for if I live long enough too.

Hello John and welcome to the forums !
If you do a build log of the Sphinx, I will surely follow along. :)

PS I have the Fly on my bench currently although work is taking a back seat to Christmas gift construction right now. :)

also from my side a warm welcome here on board of our forum

Remember to just have fun and enjoy the build.

Please post a build log and photos so we can keep up and provide assistance if needed.

Welcome aboard John.
I wish you lots of jfun building HMS Sphinx. Starting a build log here will double the joy.

You may know that Chris Watton, a friend of mine, designed the kits for Fly and Sphinx. I have a model of Fly and of Speedy, Lord Cochrane's sloop, both lovely models. Chris omitts the gun tackles which I think shoud be included as they more character to the deck. If you want to get in touch in England you can contact the Society of Model Shipwrights online at <modelshipwrights.org> We have members in Kent. As a kid I used to spend my holidays at Hythe where we had an old fisherman's hut amongst all the old Hastin Luggers. All gone now sadly.

Welcome John from a fellow Englishman. Only recently joined myself. Good luck with the Ship build and enjoy the forum.

Welcome John, another Kentish member, glad to see you on here

Welcome to this forum of great people and wonderful ideas. Interesting that you are in coastal Kent as my grandfather was born in Dymchurch. Great Great Granddad was in the Coast Guard at barracks near there. Glad to have you with us.

Hello John. I’m up in Yorkshire. Currently building Amati Russian Brig Mercury but I have the Vanguard Sphinx in the loft.
