Hello all of you,

very pleased to be here as a new member and newbie to the world of wooden scale ship modelling. My name is Lars and I live just beneath the danish border in northernmost Germany. I have spent some years in building plastic scale model ships - mostly IJN and Royal Navy from 1:700 to 1:350, like the Yamato, Mikasa, the HMS Hood and the HMS Repulse. And now its the time for me to enter the world of wooden ship models inspired by my now 93 years old father, that also liked this hobby so much until his eyes became too weak.
Currently I am investigating, what could be a suitable start - any tips and advices are very welcome.
Besides modelling I have a wonderful woman at my side and two gorgeous children.
I am looking forward to learn, discus and share the joy of this hobby in this forum.

Kind regards
Lars

Welcome! In answer to your question, just about any of the Midwest Productions releases would be a great place to start. Or if you really wanted to take the plunge, something like Occre's Beagle or Polaris.

Welcome aboard! Been up north a lot. Even once to a place called, of all things, Hunriger Wulf.

With your ship modelling background, why not go for a scratch build navy ship? There are some decent drawings of destroyers, mine sweepers, etc. If the hull is a bit too much, invest in a pre-built hull from fleetscale.com. Do the rest at scratch. Lots of fun.

Whatever. Have fun.

Welcome to the forums !
We have a section that is about getting started with lots of information. You can find it at this link:
Getting started
The most important thing you will need a patience. :)
You will find many differences between plastic kits and wood. :)
With your experience with ships, I would point you to the kit of the Polaris by Occre.

Thanks for tips regarding start. Ill take a look into the Midvest kits. I also thought about something like the HMS Alert or the Cutter Sherbourne from Vanguard. But the Beagle definately looks interesting too.

Kind regards

also from my side a warm welcome here on board of our forum

Welcome aboard from Connecticut, USA. I was into plastic modeling also and you now have many of the tools you will need (you will also need a lot of small clamps!). My experience is that wooden ships are very different than plastic and have a learning curve. There are many you tube videos available, as well as our forum section for new builders to look at. People here are very helpful if you have specific questions. I suggest you start a build log when you decide what you want to do first, it will allow us to see your work and offer suggestions. I recommend that you try starting with something simpler. I have built the model shipways kits and have found them a great way to start. The model shipways kits can be purchased with or without a set of starter tools so that is helpful. I would suggest you read the build logs of the kits here to get an idea of what is involved .
Model Expo has a deal that if you send them a picture of your completed Dory, they give you full credit of the cost of the ship to your next kit.

I also understand the models from the USA may be more expensive due to taxes and shipping. I am sure others in Europe can help with some European starter kits.

I suggest you peruse this section of the fourms

The Be able was one of my first ships in wood, challenging if new to wood, but we'll worth it. I'm now thirteen ship in and looking for my next build, I think I may have found it, but still in the development stage,, I can wait...

Welcome aboard. If I may make a suggestion Artesania Latina's Santa Maria is quite simple and with a very good set of instructions, I found it ideal for a beginner as I was (and still am...)

Hi. My first build was Amati's Lady Nelson. Good instructions, good internet videos, and decent materials. The model covers almost every skill you would need to scale up to more difficult models.
