Hi, I finished my one and only wooden build some twenty years ago which was ‘the anatomy of the HMS Bounty’. I have been building O gauge etched brass Locos for the last fifteen years but now looking at another ship project. I am looking at a double planked kit as that is what I’m familiar with. Does anyone know if either the Mantua or the Corel ‘la Couronne’ is double planked? Thanks for any feedback on this.

If the walnut is like the sapele found in kits, it gets a lot of justified criticism. It is grainy, porous, and brittle. A tight grained species like box, castello, Alaskan cedar, Swiss pear and others will serve you much better.

I built the Corel model as my first ship model, and modified and corrected lots of it based on research. It is double planked. It's one beautiful man of war. The Corel design was chosen over the Mantua one for several reasons, most noteably for the more historically accurate stern castle. The Mantua design was based on one devised by a famous ship modeler Vincenzo Lusci in the 1950's. His interpretation of the ship has been seized upon as the pattern for many models made afterward, but has some less than accurate features in the hull shape. Imagine trying to walk on the poup deck! If you need any information on La Couronne, such as a sail plan or modifications, let me know.

Thank you Darivs Architectvs for your info on the Corel kit and your build log plus the sovereign of the seas, which I did consider but may be too much of a challenge at this moment. Your la Couronne looks beautiful.

Look over the build log and take as many ideas from it as you can, then add some more things to your model and make it FABULOUS. Please make a build log! There are VERY few La Couronne builders on this and other forums.
