Help with rigging knots

Hi there! I have had repeated problems when I go to tie a knot to secure a rigging line taunt. My knots always end up with a gap between the knot and the surface that holds the line taunt. I’m sure this is a rookie mistake but it’s driving me crazy and taking away from the look of the model. What am I doing wrong? :)
Thanks for any help you can give me.

I do not remember when in ship rigging the tightness of the rope is achieved by making a know you describe. It is always with some sort of lashing of this kind or the other:

Every bit of standing rigging on a sailing vessel has some means of adjustment factored into in; be it dead-eyes & lanyards, bulls-eyes & lanyards, rigging-screws (turnbuckles); because rigging, even wire-rope, expands and contracts. Lines that get constant adjustment typically use block & tackle, such as running back stays, and the like.
Even lines that don't appear to have adjustment, or tensioning, tend to rely on another part that does; for instance a line from the bowsprit tip to the bottom of the dolphin-striker may not have adjustment, but the line from the dolphin-striker to the hull does, and it's tension keeps the other line taught.
