I'll be openly transparent here; I do not build model ships. I only joined to access some actual good hi-res maps of the Golden Hinde for a D&D map. Thanks user eugen.t for those, by the way, much needed help. Might post the map later on, though I think that would break forum rules and etiquette by going outside its scope.
I'm a bloody landlubber, a heart of horse and bayonet, an infantryman. The short time I had been able to build models, a great time I must mention and one I miss, I built Tamiya plastic models. Those seem absolutely childish in comparison with the work you folk here. I am as blown away by the scale and attention to detail you endeavor as your wallets (most likely; 500 dollars for a starter kit (Belle Poule Occhre, mentioned in a beginner thread)?? At least you spend it on wood and not plastic crack I'M LOOKING AT YOU WARHAMMER). To be honest, the lack of wood in desert country will most likely prevent me from joining this hobby, if my interest was piqued enough to spend THAT much on an initial investment. Also shipping. Shipping is going to kill me if the wood fumes don't.
If there is one thing I might be able to build, there is the old plastic Revell HMS Bounty 1:110 I have in storage. Though, it's a piece of shit. Overmold will keep me scraping till I get arthritis. Might give it a chance should I be able to import more glue from abroad! (nope. customs will harangue me for bringing something I can huff.) Even then I have to contend with a lack of good paint and enamels.
I do like ships though. Just don't know much about them in general. I live on a coastal country and see models of massed produced dhows... everywhere. Some of them looked great too. I wanted to do that.
In any case, a merry salutations to the Ships of Scale community!
