Hi ,
I have just found this excellant site whist researching my Great,Great,Great Grandfather Joseph Dance ( 1800 - 1847 ) who was a royal Marine for 18 years from 1820 to 1838. From 1831 to 1834 he served on board HMS Dublin (1812) . I have carried out extensive research of the ships musters at the National Archives at Kew and have been able to trace the voyage of other ships he served on . Joseph was aboard HMS Dublin setting sail 6 months before HMS Beagle with Charles Darwin. They followed the same route around South America . I would love to be able to find out more information and it would be great to be able to build a model of the ship or find someone who has built one . Any information would be appreciated .
A bit about some of my research at National Archives Kew can be found if you Google search ' colin dances research '

Thanks

Colin

I have just posted some information on your book thread about a Swedish Naval architect who's book from 1768 has been republished. Hope it's of interest

Hi Don
Thanks for the advice . At the moment I feel like a kid let loose in a sweet shop .. everything looks so good ! I have found an interesting thread on building miniature and ordered a book by Robert Wilson . I have little wood working experience other than the usual diy home projects but look forward to learning .

Welcome!
'shipbuilder' (one of the moderators) seems to be the expert on miniature modelling on SOS. The only thing I would say about first time modelling (from my experience) is actually the bigger the better. A med/large kit is easier to (literally) get your hands on and learn how things go together. They are also a lot more forgiving when things go slightly pear-shaped as they inevitably do.

thanks Sulaire
I will Definately keep that in mind . The front of Roberts book mentions who’s to scale up . I will take my time and look around . Thanks again

Thanks JArthurD .
Great to make the acquaintance of a US Marine . The Marines are respected for being tough on both sides of the Atlantic . Hard training . It must have been tough back in the 1800's on board the Square riggers. Looking through the ships logs when Joseph was on board it appears one of the main duties aside from protecting the ship in ports was to round up deserters and maintain order on board. Over a 18 year period he was away for several years at a time sailing the west indies ,south america and far east .royal marine.jpgbarracks.jpgparade ground.jpghamoaze.jpgmarine..jpgmarine.jpg

Hi all ,
Following on from my family research Into naval history I had an amazing opportunity financed as a birthday present !
A couple of years ago the Tall Ship Youth trust in the UK were advertising adult passages to assist funding around the west coast of Scotland on thier tall ship the Stavros S Niarchos . We sailed from Greenoch near Glasgow on the river Clyde and the trip lasted a week .
I had always wanted to see if I could make it to the top of a mast so jumped at the offer . Little did I know that duties also included doing everything the Youth crews were expected to do on the ship . The keeping watch in the early hours of the morning , cleaning the heads , helping in the galley , washing the decks , manning the sails and help steering and navigating the ship !!! I have never had so much hard work and fun. Definately recommend it . Here are a few photos that I would like to share .
