Hms Alert by Maarten [COMPLETED BUILD]

As usual, clean and very accurate workThumbs-Up. What is the new project that You have mentioned above?

Thx gents for your comments.

Not too much progress this weekend, alligning all the carlings is taking a lot of time. Secondly I put today a lot of time in my new project for which I am drawing plans at the moment.

As said carlings carlings carlings so most are in at the moment.

Hey Maarten,
Your work has an appearance of being made by CNC equipment instead of by manual labor.
Beautiful work.

what? you said it will be RC to be finished...Am I interpreting it wrong? :p
Haha Jim, you have a good memory.
Yes first the RC needs to be finished to start rigging.
But this new project needs also some desk work on which I am already working.

This is my new project. Still have to buy some flippers and a snorkel.

Hi Ron,

Many thx for the compliment.
The kit is cnc, I only add some manual labor to put it together with some minor kit bashing.
It is actually a fun kit to build and a perfect first step to POF building for anyone.

Just a tip of the veil of the work I am doing now. But I will come back on that in a new blog soon to show all the aspects and steps to come to a reconstruction of a wreck. Like selecting the correct project, finding proper sources and help from other people like @Ab Hoving for providing reference drawings, knowledge etc. But I expect no saw dust on this project for another year.

All carlings are in and lightly sanded before the ledges are fitted.

But first I made the mast parter.

Now the ledges are not in I can easily fit it between the carlings.

Tomorrow afternoon it is time for the ledges.
I think I will make these myself from some strips of cherry I will saw from left overs.
The profided milled strips are I think insufficient as I already used a part of these for my lower deck bulkheads.

And now the end is near and I face the finall bolt.
Yes they are all in.

Sofar used a 2,1 and 1,5 mm cup burr. Now I will finish them all with a 1 mm cupp burr to get this small bolt head with a ring look here already done in the bow section.

I have also added the treenails.

Now it is finishing the outside hull and then I can continue on the inside.
Just can anyone immagine how much that field of protruding nails could have affected hull's drag? Tank tests on heavily reduce models, untill the introduction of reliable prediction programs, always included a number of leaning bolts intended as turbolence generators in order to compensate the gap in Raynolds numbers. :)

Now the lower deck is almost finished I have been walking around inside and made some pictures.
See below an impression of how it is to walk around HMS Alert.

Hi Frank,

The outside planking of alert is bolted with copper bolts and clenched on shims. What you see is the boltheads with a shim behind it.
The inner hull planks are treenailed.
