Hms Alert by Maarten [COMPLETED BUILD]

Thx gents.
@Peter Voogt haha you experienced it yourselve on your bluenose, do you take that with you in September to Duizel? I join with 4 models hopefully then my Alert is finished.
Unfortunately, Maarten. After contact with an NVM representative, my BN was not admitted. And together with those of Johan and Henk, we wanted to show with the three of us.
The registration states that the original must be from before 1900. And the BN is from 1921.
So, I only take my Robt. E. Lee to show.
Regards, Peter

This morning, Johan pointed me and the ‘change of rules’ for the meeting (of this year):
”Only wooden and paper/cardboard ship models of which the original ship is made of wood and built before 1940 are allowed.”
So Maarten @Maarten: my BN (and from Johan and Henk) is welcom!
Regards, Peter

Hi Maarten. I have been checking out your build log the last couple of days and it is really a masterpiece. I had already read in Peter Voogt's BN build log that you too had "decapitated" your model. Shocking:) . The epoxy diorama including the anchor and buoy are a delight to watch.
Btw. I love your kichen tiles.

Very good work on the hanging knees - good that you have cute the hull already
I am surprised, that the knees are looking relatively thin......

Hi Uwe,

Agree with you on this, these are as supplied with the kit and I haven t checked the AotS on this. Normally they are about the same thickness as the deck beams and partly overlapping these.

The three Bluenose models have already been declared "Welcome" since the 2 May.

Thx gents for all likes and comments.

I started with the fwd SB gun port sill.
First I marked the proper height.

Next is to saw away the frame in between with my small Japanese saw.

20220520_124358.jpg
20220520_124512.jpg

Now file angled edges on the sill and contrasting slots in the frame and glue in the sill with pva.
20220520_135522.jpg

Before the glue is dried file the sill so it follows the shape of the hull. If you file it while the pva is stil wet the saw dust enters into possible openings in the joint closing these and creating a perfect joint.
20220520_135719.jpg

Now finally some plankings on deck. The waterways are fitted in place. I glued them in place with CA and black pva between the joints.

20220520_170726.jpg

Now the construction should have enough strength to start the second big cut.

I have marked all the cutting lines with a knive using the template provided.

20220520_171809.jpg

Again my small saw comes in handy cutting down frame by frame. I saw just above the marking so I can fine tune the frames by file when al are cut.
20220520_172145.jpg
20220520_172702.jpg

Working slowly foreward leaving some frames in between for rigidity.
20220520_174940.jpg

Now the bow is completely freed.
20220520_181058.jpg

Working towards the stern I leave a strong three double frame in place which I will remove at last.
20220520_182245.jpg

Next time I will finish this cutting proces, now just some dry fitting.

Thx gents for likes and comments.

To protect the protruding hanging knees I use the top of the building cradle as a stand.
20220525_182721.jpg

Next is fitting the gunwale. This is a lot of fitting and filing. First I will fit all gunwale parts over the frame timbers before finishing them.

Dear Maarten
magnificent work, it's looks wonderful
good luck with the next steps :D

The gunwale is build up in segments.
20220529_161555.jpg

Section by section is filed to fit over the frame timber.
20220529_175542.jpg

The PS gunwale is now filed to fit the frame timbers. This is many hours of filing and fitting.
20220529_185917.jpg

Followed by sanding down the frame timbers which are capped by the gunwale.
20220601_181628.jpg

The sides of the gunwale I shape in a rounded profile to give it a less massive appearence. This I do with a scraper made of a razor blade.

Dry fitting the gunwale.

20220601_204948.jpg

The gunwale still needs some steam to give ot the correct curvature.

The PS gun wale is now fitted.
I treated it with black ecoline twice and sanded in between with steel wool. Finally I applied a layer of clear coat and sanded again with steel wool. The frame tops which will be visible later I pretreated with ecoline.

The stern gun wale is made of an outside and inside part. In the manual these are installed in a much earlier stage but as I want to have the correctly lined up with the rest of the gun wale I fit them now. The parts which have to fit between the frames I removed as I will fit also an inner bullwark.

20220610_173716.jpg

All are now in place.
20220610_173547.jpg
20220610_173651.jpg

On the isde I now have to make the bullwarks from scratch.
