A Log of sorts....

Well I broke the seals and commenced sawing timber. Aug 21- 25 '24
Commenced with a 24 pounder as I wanted to see if I could get wheel pegs in to the axels wo damaging the wheels. Success. A wee bit of trimming at a later date. My small hand sanding wheel and small "chisels" have been invaluable. As much has already been covered in other threads and this portion of build is more like " .... an assembly ....?" in this forum; I am not going to go into much detail regarding pics except #013 and the last 3 and as I progress.....

#013; Horatio was not pleased. Indeed the Upper/Lower Gun Port "Beams" are very fragile; just the free weight caused it to snap. I'm an old sailor and Gosh Golly Gee Whiz was muttered a few times. MDF does not break cleanly, no worries once a gently sanded the ends, glued as a butt joint the parts still fit nicely into allocated rabbets. Mr Watton's kit is simply outstanding regarding how everything has been designed and cut. Everything fits cleanly and is very concise.........

I will fair the hull properly once I sort out what is shown at the last 3 pics. Alignment has reared its ugly head. I took some basic measurements et all and everything seems parallel and squarish......I have a few ideas, any ideas from the community is of course welcome....but as I ponder my next course of action....... a Guinness is calling me.

Have a Great Navy Day all!

Hi David,
Your work is looking really good. Unsolicited advice does not always get a happy reception, but there are some things about the kit that do not look right on both the cannon pattern and the carriages. Not sure these would be of importance to you but if this of interest please let us know.

Hi Allan, I would agree with you and any advice is appreciated. An excellent kit but I do take it for what it is. If I can modify items that would get fittings and equipment close to accurate as possible that is also a goal. I have the tools and I do have complete monographs of other ships et al for a couple of POF kits I have waiting in the wings that I can refer to. This forum/participants is an important resource to utilize…. again any advice and/or constructive criticism is welcome. 42 years in the military….. me feelings won’t be hurt ;) With this Idef……I’ll be sanding sanding and a tad more sanding fairing for the next couple of days while I plot out me next steps ….

Hi David
Got your PM and responded with information on the cannon and carriages. AND---- THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE.

Horatio is just seventeen and he is still too seasiked and frightened by his miserable life aboard HMS Justinian to warry about that... :-))

Looking great! Wouldn't your figure be Captain Pellew? Mr. Hornblower would have been a midshipmen or an acting lieutenant on the Indefatigable.

Yes, that is Captain Pellow. I am in the rigging stages of this ship model. It is hard! But the basic kit is accurate and came together well.
