HMS Vanguard 1787 1:72 a Victory Models kit

Beautiful job on her !
Thanks Jeff for your kind assessment. I am happy mostly with how things turned out, but still need to find a solution for stable mounting.

I recently found this build and I agree with all that you did a fantastic job on a massive scale. One suggestion I would think would work well in this size of a case ( especially with no sails and the green base board) is using a dry dock slip. See example below. A little more work but would benefit and support that massive hull.View attachment 529380
Thanks RW this is a fine idea. I will look into what I might be able to do. It will require some scratch skills, which I do not have an abundance of.

Good afternoon. Wow, Bravo !!! I totally agree with the no sails look as your rigging is brilliant and detailed and we would not want sails hiding this. Your display case is beautiful (makes me envious compared to the one I hacked out for my Victory ROTF ) and I agree with Paul re the pedestals. A stunning model well done. Cheers Grant

Thanks Grant your words are always kind and soothing. I saw your victory case and it is worthy. These models are large and encasing them with only 35mm clearances requires a large structure. My corners are 30mm squared and 940mm long made from solid hardwood and everything still creaks and twists on moving.

Finally completed the cradle support and nameplate.

The Vanguard is now in its forever home.

I am closing this thread and will not post any further updates.

Thank you all for your interest, comments and suggestions. It has been a joy throughout.

I will start another project soon and create a new build thread when I do

Stunning! What a beautiful model and a perfect way to display her. You have much to be proud of. Well done!

You made a very nice model with impressive rigging, Michael. And a display case gives such a model always some extra glamour. Chapeau!
Regards, Peter

I have two comments on your build.
1: good: the way you are using the fillers
2: Bad: Please do NOT insert the decks before the Hull is finished. You will remember my words, when you will have to insert Gunport, gun, riggen the guns, as many will be below deck, with other running Riggen

Currently planning to start the second planking. I admit to having some hesitation and anxiety about starting the layer that will be visible. Performance anxiety.
I have finished lining the gunports with lids, although I realize I missed one without lid. Also varnished the gun deck with a second coat of poly as the first one had a white residue, and I made the mistake of not testing on sample strips before applying to the model. All good now.
Next I marked out the quarter galleries forward edges to terminate the planks there.
Finally I spent some time marking out the main and minor wales on both sides, and plan to place my first second layer plank at the top edge of the main wale and work upwards.
The wales are identified from the 1:1 full scale drawing however there are discrepancies. On the plan the main wale is 18mm wide but the instructions say to use two 5mm and two 4mm planks and then a 3mm strake on top, = 21mm. So like others I will work on the basis that the 18mm lines are before the top strake. Also the minor wale is to be made of one 5mm and two 4mm planks but its width on the plan is 12mm. I don’t like the number 13, so I will use three 4mm planks.

Finally in trying to plan ahead, I have 6mm brass sheaves to go into the sheave block slots, but they needed to be widened to accommodate the sheave. Perhaps smaller ones would have been better but they are hard to find and even harder to handle.View attachment 340272View attachment 340273View attachment 340274View attachment 340275
Chestcutter, your lines for the forward edges of the Quarter Galleries.... are they at the forward edges of the horizontal support pieces (parts 59-63)? or including the frames of the quarter gallery windows? You will understand why I am asking. johnv.
