HMS Victory (1765) - Artesania Latina [COMPLETED BUILD]

Finally getting around to posting pictures of the completed build of Victory. I finished it on June 6th, 2024 which puts the total build time at ~2300 hours over 5 years and 4 months.

I've started doing some research on cases, but I'm thinking I'll probably have to go with the custom made case. Any recommendations??? Size is 51" long X 40" high x 24 inches wide. I did get one quote from a well respected case maker in Seattle. Starting price was $7.5K - which is not possible. Currently, I'm using my dust/pet hair cover of PVC and plastic and then bought a thin piece of acrylic to put along the front face to get an unobstructed view, but the acrylic also acts as a barrier to curious kitties that get on the table. A year ago, one of my cats got behind the plastic and walked down the length of the nearly full rigged ship. That took a lot of meticulous cleaning. That is such a beautiful model. I'm so glad to see the Ivory sides instead of the yellow. It looks way better this way. I'm toying with this kit for my next build. I have reason to believe that my Grandfather served on it in the late 1800's and looking now for more information on him. Incidentally I'm putting sails on my Cutty Sark and found some Elmers glue that is clear. Painted both sides of a sail with the glue and left it on a curved surface with waxed paper between the sail and the curved surface to dry over night. The next day I removed it from the form and peeled the waxed paper off and had a nice curved sail (lower Main) to work with. It was very pliable but kept it's form pretty well with help from the lines attached to it. I'll try a few more sails like this and see how it goes. Norgale
Regarding the colors, if you haven't seen it previously, here's a video from the National Museum of the Royal Navy showing their research in coming up with the "true colors" of Victory at the time of Trafalgar. Ivory was the color of the masts, but the strips along the side are a sort of pale terra cotta.

Good idea on using the clear glue on the sails. I'd like to see how that looks. The one thing I liked about using starch was that if I didn't like the outcome, I just rinsed the sail with some soap to get rid of all the starch. Then start again with ironing dry out and then starching again for shape.

Congratulations for completion of your Victory - great project with great result
Very good work
