HMS Victory Mantua 1:78 (first build) by Grant Tyler

Fantastic achievement Grant. This end result most certainly deserves several 'Carling Black Label' and some serious internal contemplation during a celebratory Braai for a "Grant made Rope Walk" Thumbs-UpBeerBeerBeer Cheers and congrats.
Good morning. Thank you very much. Yes I had a lovely braai with the family (extended with my children’s boyfriend and girlfriend). After a few Castles my son was keen to see if my ship would float- he nearly lost his inheritance ROTF .Congratulations on the AB wining the Rugby championship (again). You guys need to give us a turn sometime. Cheers Grant

Good morning

I took Kurts @DARIVS ARCHITECTVS flamethrower to the fluff,

I use a small lighter and flick the flame on the fluff areas a number of times. This does not allow enough continuous flame for it to ignite.
Cheers Grant
WOW! now that is impressive Speechless Thumbsup

Good morning. This morning I tied my last clove hitch on the ratlines.

Here are the number of clove hitches
Mizzen mast - 624
Main mast - 1482
Fore mast - 1186
Total clove hitches - 3292. o_Oo_O

I finally finished off the futtock shrouds being the last :

All I have to do is carefully burn off the fluff.

Cheers Grant
Congratulations with this milestone of ratlines, Grant :) And for burning off the fluff without catching fire and reaching the 100-pages build-log;)
Regards, Peter

Good morning

Good morning Richie. Congratulations on the AB winning the Rugby Championship. They are crazy good - even when they are out of form they are still the best in the world. Cheers Grant
Hey Grant, cheers but it was never won till it was over, SA could have snatched but not to be, what a thrilling close series.

The ratlines look cleaner. Great job for not burning the ship down. That must have been tricky work.
Good morning Kurt. Than you. The futtock ratlines proved difficult especially on the main mast as I fitted the main yard first- never again will I make that mistake. I also tend to put a little too much CA on the first and last knot- fear of these coming loose I expect. Cheers Grant

Good morning.

This post is aptly named Duck !
Jumping Jack Grant was tired of blocking the foremast yards so decided to fit the driver boom.

The boom is attached to Mizzen mast with Parral beads :

Here lies the problem! The Mizzen mast contrary to Mantua instructions does not have a rubbing strake. Mantua does not have parrals so the jaws fit higher up the mast. Thus my boom is a little low. Hence the “Duck” Grants Victory crew need to watch out here. ROTF

There are two lift lines running from the aft of the boom through 5mm blocks below the cap (Blue arrows) down to 5mm double sheave blocks 40mm below the top (blue circles). The tackle runs through a block on the channel.(red arrows)

They are tied off to a circular fife rail on the mast......oops no circular fife rail on Grants Victory. When I prepped the Mizzen I was using Mantua plans. It is unbelievable how basic the Mantua model is. Until I make a plan I have wrapped the end around the belay pin rack.

The driver boom sheets are rigged to an iron horse attached to the transom knees with a hook and block and another 5mm double sheave block through the comb.

There are a double set of horses runningROTF from arse end of boom to the comb seen above.

The Driver boom-

Very well done. I look forward to seeing how you will solve the problem of the circular fife rail on the mizzen mast. I have no doubt you will work something out.

Good morning Jeff. Ahh the circular fife rail. In fact all the belay pin rails are short of pins as well. E.g Mantua main mast belay pin rail has 8 pins and from my research I’m going to need 12? No blame on Mantua here there Victory is designed for limited rigging.

Note to modelers who during the build decide to change to more accurate rigging : challenges will arise. I think I am going to have to add more shroud cleats to accommodate these extra lines unless a better plan arises. Not accurate (clearly) however may well solve my problem. Cheers Grant
