HMS Victory Mantua 1:78 (first build) by Grant Tyler

Wow! Phew! Exhausted (sweat dripping from forehead) - and that just from reading this! The Dutch have a saying "petje af" which means "hats off ". What you have done here and are still doing, has my unqualified admiration. The growth, development and learning capacity you have shown in such a short time, is simply astounding. You are well on your way to creating a masterpiece here, young man!

Good morning.

Grants anchor tied off. An example of how NOT to do a cathead.
As mentioned Mantua does not have a anchor block and the Cathead too narrow.

I definitely want a 3 sheaves 7mm anchor block- so became creative.

Grants modifications to his cat head- completely wrong but makes the block work.
I
added a sanded down a 3mm block (sanded as small as I could) to the side of the cathead. Made the “extra” sheave so to speak.

….my bow anchor.

The anchor cable is not set- just stuck it in the haus hole. Will only set once the port anchor is done to achieve symmetry.

Cheers Grant

Good morning

A merry Christmas and Holidays to everyone. I cannot believe it’s that time of the year already, Arlene and I had a big Christmas Eve last night with family and friends at our place and a special night it was. Made me think of this :

Christmas is the spirit of giving without a thought of getting. It is happiness because we see joy in people. It is forgetting self and finding more time for others. It is discarding the meaningless and stressing the true values."—Thomas S. Monson

Have the best time guys.

Guess I didn't receive all notifications...
I hope you had an enjoyable Christmas with your loved ones.
Luckily I'm in time to wish you a very prosperous New Year.

Good morning. Been away for a few days with my family- man it was good.

My Christmas presents:

Ashtyn (my daughter )bought me a mini lathe says I need some assistance with my ship building and Justin (my son) a mini table saw. He being more like Arlene is not so full of s&@tROTF…. I think Ashtyn inherited some of my genes. Poor lass…ROTF.She is correct tho.

This morning I made a nun bouy for my Anchor.

I shaped a left over dowel to size and covered it with Elastoplast material. I used 0.6mm thread for the rigging. I did not run these accurately with splices etc. At this size, at my skill level I simplified this. Copied Paul’s @dockattner method. As I am staining these I did not worry about the glue marks.

Stained it with indian ink.

I attached it to the stays. The bouy line is too thick. I have run out of 0.4mm thread so made a Hank with0.6mm. to see what it will look like.

There will be four of these.

Hi Grant. It is good to see you back at work. Those presents look great and I am sure will be put to good use on the Xebec too. I think the buoy looks excellent - it is difficult to gauge the rope thickness on such a close-up pic as it doesn't give you the overall view. How about a more zoomed-out shot?

Good morning Heinrich. Thanks. Your wish is my command ;)

My logic is : I don’t believe the nun bouy line would be larger than the lanyards ? They are 0.5mm. I don’t have any accurate information on how big these bouy lines are.

I reccomend changing blade for Proxxon one it will save you a lot of wood(and frustration;)). I also used caliper instead of printed scale. Lathe is acually quite good

Nice job with bouys. Many mistakes only author can see, so don't wory. 0,2mm diffrence won't ruin such great model
