HMS Victory Mantua 1:78 (first build) by Grant Tyler

Good morning. Going through some of my posts the finish looks very glossy. Sorry guys however most of my building is done early mornings and in the dark- with power cuts- the lights I use makes it glossy. I do use a Matt paint (does have a sheen to it - rather enjoy it although not purist in nature....come to think of it neither is Grants Victory ) and Indian inkHere is a pic I took now : better I think.Cheers Grant

I love the close up shots you get and how detailed you are with your work. I hope i can be as good with my build as I feel very humbled following all you amazing builders

Good morning Rob. Thank you very much. I think Ron hit the nail on the head- As we go our ships (unless we are those really talented chaps - they are all over SOS) are called Perseverance... we do, redo, learn and bit by bit we build our ship. I appreciate your comment. Cheers Grant

Good afternoon. My last post for a few days. I’m off to George and The Wilderness for a few days- businesses. I guess we have to work every once and a while ;).

I tied off all the lanyards for shrouds on the main mast. I pretty much followed this other than the final tie which is whipped to the shroud.Blue arrow. I merely did a double half hitch to the shroud. IGNORE RED arrows(used pic from previous post).

and on the Portsmouth Victory- very loose and erratic. I attempted to make them neater...lucky for me they are untidy on the Portsmouth Victory .

That are very nice and impressive photos, Grant. And this rope-work is very tight and even. Top!
Although it’s business, have some nice days along Wilderness. I have great memories, flying my paragliding along the mountain rigde of Wilderness.

Your ship really does look fantastic, great job and if I could build something as beautiful I would be very proud of it so hope you will be too.

Simply gorgeous build Grant! You ahve been critical at times of the Mantua kit (and rightly so), but your attention to detail and exquisite workmanship have turned this into a marvellous ship to look at! Enjoy your business trip - Business/Wilderness ... yeah, right! ROTF

Your work on the lanyards is impeccable.
If you get fed up with your current job, just apply for one on the Portsmouth Victory, you'll easily get a job to correct the standing-and running rigging, hands down.

Good morning. Rigging “on the ship”..... Redface....this is Grant :

I rigged the backstays and the main stay so I could tension all the shrouds. In my uneducated logic the shroud tension alone may change the 1 degree rake of the mast and alignment. All the backstays will be undone for the futtock shrouds
and ratlines. Clearly nothing tied off.

The Victory has the following backstays :
Blue Arrows
3 topmast standing stays connected via smaller deadeyes
A topmast breast stay connected via tackle and block
Topmast shifting stay - block and tackle
Red Arrows
Top gallant standing stay - deadeye
Top gallant Royal backstay - pendant and lashing

Red arrow is for the mast top stay block however I need to make some more hooks first.

Blunders: First pic:
You will notice the standing stays dead eye lanyards are shorter than the shrouds. This is correct 15mm vs 20mm however I put the stay deadeye on the channel upside downROTF . Some redo coins from @rtibbs for me.

The good news- I got my shroud deadeyes nicely tensioned and mostly aligned:D:D.

2. Not my blunder however the standing stays touch the mast top on way down. These should not. The Mantua build does not include these, in fact only has 3 of the seven, and I only assume the channel or top is out of scale- will have to live with this:

Lastly : sorry guys tried to keep it briefROTF
The main stay heart block lashed to collar which runs through marine walk to bow sprit. Also not tied.

Great work Grant, re-do's and all Thumbsup

Grant,
I have been silently following your awesome build. Very belated comments  apologies -- Your work is superb. Your current images are
so great.
PS: This ship (as a build) has and will always intimidate me - I'm in awe of builders who can do her the justice that she deserves. Yours is one of them.

I did have the luck to board her in the mid 90s when I was working and had some time off - Also saw the Mary Rose in her earlier setting.
Her museum has been totally renewed - would love to visit both again someday.
Your log is so great!!

Cheers,

Good morning Peter. Thank you. Yesterday was all work and no play. So you know this beautiful piece of SA coastline. Paragliding along The Wilderness beach from the ridge must have been an awesome experience. I’m a tad jealous so maybe a tandem flight is on my bucket list. Cheers Grant

Good Morning Richie. Cheers- much appreciated. There are days when I love my Victory and others when she is an arch foe ;). Recently the former applies....On the whole I am pretty“chuffed” the way “Grants Victory is progressing this. Cheers Grant

This is looking SO GOOD Grant! Lots of work, but worth it at every turn.
Hello Paul. Thank you much appreciated. Never in my wildest dreams when I began this project did I imagine the volume of work involved. If one had to build this ship % it would take a decade (literally). It is a fun journey though- which I guess is why we play with these little vessels.;). cheers Grant

Good morning Heinrich. Thank you - coming from you this means a lot. The Mantua it is a base kit of the Victory. It is also very affordable relatively speaking. I reckon it is a 30% kit (and manufactured so- I cant criticize Mantua for that). It would be a “bashers ” dream no doubt Kurt would love it! Well, I work all yesterday and today will also be hectic however I most definitely will take time out on Thursday to experience this part of the world- pity Arlene couldn’t make it. It is wonderful place to share time with the Admiral. Cheers Grant

Hello Johann. ROTFThanks. I think it would then fail the health and safety standards and I would be rapidly dismissed;). Cheers Grant

View attachment 319156Awesome snaps Grant, I particularly liked the last one Thumbsup

Makes all the blood, sweat, tears and disobedient cats worth the while ROTF
Good morning to my fellow SAFer living down under. Thank you very much. I liked that photo as well. Some times it is fun just snapping away down and around the ship and once in a while a peach of a photo come out. The cat has become my best buddy - I think she is having a guilt trip. Even lies on my stomach when I watch TV no- go figureROTF. Cheers Grant

Good morning John. Thank you. I admire the way you build your ships and the quality achieved so this is seriously appreciated. My ship does lack the quality of detail however I have learned so much as I progress. I’ve said it before I was plain silly to attempt the Victory as ship build no1. She will be completed tho:D.

I visit the UK on occasion (for business- not my choice for holiday) and both the Victory and Mary Rose will be on the agenda for my next visit. Cheers Grant
