HMS Victory Mantua 1:78 (first build) by Grant Tyler

Good morning.

I tensioned and tied off my Mainstay and main preventer stay. These are lashed to the collars I previously made onto the bowsprit through the marine walk. I need to snake a 0.2mm rope between each of these. This is going to be something Grant is going to need that swear jar for. Some research needs to be done on how to knot these....

Got to love “Grants Victory “....it even changes color . Second pic taken under lights and the color I actually want in third pic with natural sun light. It is to confuse the French and Spanish fleets- first attempt at marine camouflage..

Cheers Grant

Oh boy - that zig-zag pattern or what is called "snaking" on the plans, sure looks to be a major headache to accomplish. My only consolation is that in China there is a fellow Saffer struggling just as much with hull planking! ROTF I don't even use bad words (don't have the energy), I just sigh!

Heinrich, isn’t Anna available to help? She’s great at planking!

On the zig-zag, it looks like you measure where the knots should be, mark them off, string the “snake” up to them and tie them off. It looks like you’d have to use some really fine line.

Hey Grant,
If you look at the drawing the 'snaking' isn't knotted - it is lashed. This should provide some flexibility in terms of keeping the pattern uniform as you can slide the lashing up and down the stays to get each attachment point in the right position - then glue it into place and cut the ends off the lashing. Won't be easy (understatement) and it won't be fast (understatement #2) - but doable. I have never done anything like this so take what I am suggesting with a grain of salt. It seems it will also be difficult to not pull the stays out of alignment - maybe use a piece of something as a spacer???

Make a fun game out of it...with each ten lashing you take a shot :D...

Hi Grant. Not sure if you have seen this video but paint wise its quite interesting and lots of models may need to be repainted :)

Good morning Paul. Thanks.....I think. Boy that is insane. Those are tiny lashings. The most difficult thing is the stays, while nicely tensioned ,will move as well as I do the lashings. I have a feeling this is going to be one of my procrastination projects. If I take your Game advice, I will be pretty hammered by the time I am half way.....could be fun ROTF. Cheers Grant

Hi Grant. Not sure if you have seen this video but paint wise its quite interesting and lots of models may need to be repainted :)

Good morning. The Victory re painting. Ah yes has caused head aches for many. The salmon/fleshy pink (what I went for with its changing colour), the traditional yellow or as most current modelers use a yellow ochre tint. Even on the Portsmouth Victory with the new coloring it also changes colour depending on the light of day. In my opinion Admiralty Paints yellow ochre is the most accurate colour for this model- super expensive and ridiculously expensive to get to SA. I think most modelers today still stick with a yellow ochre based colour vs the pinky yellow shown on the Portsmouth Victory. I can see Admiral Nelson turning in his crypt with a pink Victory- the French and Spanish probably having a giggle as well.
Cheers Grant

Good morning Vic. Thanks. I have a feeling this may need a couple of attempts to get right. I agree with you will probably need a 0.1mm thread (going to have to order some) although I have not found a table or reference which gives me this yet- still looking. Cheers Grant

Good idea Vic- maybe Heinrich can bring Anna and visit his “home” in Melkbosstrand again and she could help.. Cheers Grant
Confusing post- Anna could do my Snaking and netting for me. I still don’t have Heinrich’s magic touch as Arlene and Ashtyn both tell me “it’s your ship”. I think I need some coaching here

I think the Pink illusion described is more metameric than actual.

No magic touch, my friend. All the magic comes from the Admiral - she is one of a kind.
