Been following ships of scale for a few years, now need help.

Are there any recommendations for a 1/48 scale plank on frame kits for HMS Victory.
Ex Army,Ex firefighter has finally retired, Victory has always had a fascination for me.
I thought I would try scratch build, thus purchased drawings from J. Mcay, The Anatomy of Nelson’s ship and Anatomy of the Gun ship Victory by J.McKay.

scratch building learning curve is going to take to long, have managed to make 38 frames of various quality.

Any suggestions
 
There aren't any 1/48th scale kits of Victory, the closest would be Caldercraft's 1/72 scale one. Occre is releasing a 1/87th scale limited edition one that is in the admiralty style but with masts and sales. Then Artesania Latina has a kind of mishmash POF/POB/admiralty one in 1/84th with a rudimentary interior.

That said, welcome to the forum. Scratchbuilding a Victory is jumping into pretty deep water without a a flotation device. Definitely sink or swim. I'm not going to tell you not to do it, but maybe have that going on the backburner while tackling a couple smaller kits might help. But you do you, and we'll look forward to your work. Again, welcome to the forum.

Thanks for quick reply, you are right, sink or swim still floating at the moment, but may need to side slide for a while. any suggestions for a good quality 1/48 scale pof kit.
 
There are a few, they are pretty expensive but very high quality. The most popular ones are the HMS Enterprize from Modelship Dockyards. Dry-dock Models sells it for $1270. A couple companies sell a French xebec named Le Requin in 1/48th, you can find them on ebay or the ZHL website (though I am trying to get Dry-Dock to sell them, too). They are about the same price as the Enterprize. If you are open to other scales Miniature Arts makes a nice Port Jackson Schooner that is hybrid POF/POB. But my favorite recommendation would have to be the Unicorn 1/24th 36' French Longboat made from Cherry Wood. I have been building it for about 3 weeks now and it has just been a joy to build. I've liked it so much I also bought the Pear Wood version, which is made from Swiss Pear, which is considered a superior wood for ship models.
 
That will help some but ships are a totally different world. I used to build RC planes. Had a scratch 1/4 Taylorcraft, 1/5 Zeke and a 1/5 P-61 Black Widow.
Since you've not done any large ships, I would point you toward the HMS Alert. Unfortunately, the Trident kit is currently out of stock, but here is a link to a source.

Thanks for prompt reply, HMS Enterprise sounds good, Been following builds. Will look at it, if I can get it to Australia.
Also interested in longboat, is that from Modelship Dockyards?

I believe the original drawings at RMG are 1:48 for both the 1737 and 1765 ships. There are at least 3 or 4 for the 1737 version and about ten, maybe more for the 1765 version. I am pretty sure there are no contemporary drawings of her based on the rebuild in 1803 at RMG but you can email them and ask.

Does anyone know what the Anatomy drawings are based on, contemporary drawings or as she was in 1987?
