How is your rope making game?

I believe today that the ropewalk at Chatham spins the rope for Great Britain’s historic ships. I used to have a piece of rope made there as I was the helper during the demonstration. I can’t remember what I did to earn the sample. It was quite soft compared to modern day rope.

My wife and I made a number of trips to England and Scotland. Covid, death of both members of the couple that we traveled with, and now age ended that. We visited Portsmouth several times, Chatham once, and of course the NMM as well as its small craft museum at Falmouth. Museums in the British Isles are wonderful! Everywhere you go there are knowledgeable docents anxious to talk to you. The British value their history in a way that we don’t. It is also notable that the wonderful travel experiences that we remember came from casual interactions with British people that we met.

We went to the Chatham ropewalk in the summer. Saw the demonstration they do there and they ran the ropewalk for a few minutes. Fantastic to see it.
I bought a length of nicely made rope from their shop.

I also made that visit and they confirmed that they will be making the ropes for the Victory restoration - an estimated 25 miles of it.
