How to carve a simple groove?

For very light cuts, you can use a drill press if you don’t have a mill. Go easy on the side force though because a drill press spindle does not have thrust bearings for side forces, only axial force. Use the shortest mill bit you can to go eat on the drill. I once milled the buttstock for an MP-44 sturmgewehr rifle using just a drill press from walnut.
I would suggest employing a good X-Y table also

Instead of a wood + nail, the author is using the mill vise with an old drill bit.

Oh I see. The old screw point is fixed as a pivot, the piece of wood is moved along that fixed point so the milling is always running along the curve. One just has to be careful moving the piece of wood along the axis.
