It's time to take care of this wooden submarine: the Ictineo II (1864), scale 1/46, a kit of an unknown Russian brand (WoodenKit) ...

Ictineo II is the first autonomous submarine equipped with a real chemical reaction engine.
With a reinforced wood structure in steel, copper and brass: it is the true ancestor of the current submarines ...
Monturiol's research was also a source of inspiration for Jules Verne's Nautilus!
Unfortunately, Narcis Monturiol, the designer, did not have the expected success. And his creditors seized Ictineo II (Ictineo I was a smaller prototype) to sell it as scrap metal ... so it was destroyed.

The kit itself is not great (and cheap either!). Pre-cut wood and strakes are a Russians' habit, but the photo cut is coarse, the medium wood cut-outs, the details of the original Ictineo are almost absent.
All the doc is in Russian without translation found.

So, after mounting a Master Korabel kit with the gunboat (Canon Jolle), it's strange! o_O

It will have to hack to make this thing a little elegant. I'm still not sure if I'll succeed!
On paper, the kit looks like this (but quite frankly, with what I have in the box, I do not even know how to get to this result, it appears stuff that I do not ...):

Stolen pict : this is not the real kit from the box !!!

Needless to say for those who know me a little that I will do as I feel without worrying about the aspect above ... ;)
For the moment, here I am:

Then with a little sanding:

Preparation of surface elements and brass and copper parts:

Well ... I felt that there was something weird between the picture of the kit and what's in the box.
I found: the picture is NOT the kit in the box! Thumbs-Down

False picture of the Russian kit:

But the representation of an exploded Ictineo half shell produced by the Spanish society disappeared Ánfora modelismo ...

I knew this kit, but the product in picture of my kit just not tinted the same, and especially hides the side half shell!
Here is the original signed photo:

I hate to have me ...
Absolutely avoid making the same mistake as me.

Here is the REAL kit from the box (picture from a forum of Russian models) :

So, I'm freestyle on this one, and I'm going to get along as best I can!
I go in full scratch mode to make this model and I will finish it! ;)

Sorry to hear about the "small difference" ......
I cross the fingers that you will manage it in order to pimp the kit to the best - But as we know your modelling possibility - > it will get a very interesting and very good model - I will follow with big interest

Things are moving at their own pace :
- the side caps, nose and turret are made,
- all the brass elements are blackened and ready,
- a projector has been manufactured,
- the base is also being cut, with the support rods, the frame to receive is pierced. It's still raw, but the idea is there ...
- the color tests have given something that I like for the wood of the submarine (but you'll see later)!

It really looks like an interesting building log - I like the idea with the base - I guess you will show sea-bed - so the submarine diving

Well, I continued a little:
- the base is made with its sand seabed, the outline in anthracite black and a burnished copper strip with rivets on 3 sides,
- the hull is finished and received a 1st layer in white wood tint (before receiving a 2nd more natural),
- a few adjustments and propeller block / rudder to check the locations ...

Well, I'm approaching the end of this submarine adventure ...
I put you all the photos, even if some are redundant!
The last show a first pass of a wash (include aging wood and metal parts, adding rust spots or green algae, corrosion), I must refine a little. :)

In conclusion: do not buy this kit !! The Russian publisher has no qualms about the presentation photos (stolen from a private artist) or the parts provided (low quality). I do not even mention it anymore, I will not do marketing to him either.
The result is really a sum of crafts, additions, various transformations ... It is not perfect, but at least this submarine has the merit to exist in a correct way. :)

So, as usual, I post you a last series of photos on a more neutral background. After that, this submarine will find a suitable place somewhere in the house ... :)

What we have noticed, when it comes to you as the shipwright, it doesn't actually matter what quality of the kit in your hands. We know that the end results, the actual model, will be top notch, and well made. This model is no exception and just prove it. Great job as always!!
What next on your radar, Ekis?
