I’m excited to announce something new for the ship modeling community—the launch of the SeaWatch Books Podcast! This podcast is an extension of everything SeaWatch stands for: a passion for ship modeling, maritime history, and expert craftsmanship. For years, SeaWatch Books has been dedicated to publishing some of the finest books in the field, bringing together the knowledge of expert modelers, historians, and researchers. Now, with this podcast, we’re expanding how we share content—through engaging conversations with top modelers, authors, and industry leaders. We’ll cover a wide range of topics, from the history of ship modeling to the latest trends in kit manufacturing, online resources, and behind-the-scenes insights from master builders.

Episode 1: Inside the World of a Professional Ship Modeler with Rob Napier

To kick things off, I couldn’t have asked for a better guest than Rob Napier, one of the most respected names in ship modeling. If you’re involved in the hobby, chances are you’ve come across his work—whether through his books, his museum-quality restorations, or his many contributions to the Nautical Research Guild.

In this episode, Rob takes us through his lifelong journey in ship modeling, from his early days building plastic kits to becoming one of the foremost professionals in the field. We discuss:

How he got started and the early influences that shaped his passion for ship modeling.
His transition from hobbyist to professional, including his first commissions and major projects.
His thoughts on historical accuracy, craftsmanship, and what makes a truly great model.
Stories behind some of his most notable work, including his projects for museums and private collectors.
His upcoming book and what’s next in his career.

It’s a fascinating conversation that offers insight not just into Rob’s incredible career, but into the world of professional ship modeling itself. If you’ve ever wondered what it takes to restore and build museum-quality models—or what goes on behind the scenes of this meticulous craft—this episode is a must-listen.
