I am Mark and I am new to the hobby. I have been reading this site for a long time and find it very helpful have always wanted to build wooden ships during period of the pirates of the Caribbean but I am just starting the hobby. Right now, I am in the process of building my first ship in a bottle. After this project, I will start building wooden ships. I have bought most of the basic tools but have not purchased a building slip. I would like to know what expert builders think about whether this would be a good purchase being what I have looked at are so expensive. I also am interested in getting suggestions on the ship I should start with, I am 68.

I am looking forward to meeting and get advice from more experienced hobbyists.

Welcome to SoS, Mark.

The Model Shipwrights Fair~a-Frame is pretty much junk in my experience. You could build a slip from scratch easily enough that will work better. I have seen some other commercial slips on the site here that have received positive comments, but I have no direct experience wi those.

Greetings!
I've never used a slip, myself. I wouldn't bother with such at this stage. Just build and let the model sit on your table until you truly 'need' for the model to be sitting upright and held steady. You then either use the 'display-stand' that came with the kit or carve out a crude piece of foam for the model to sit in while you're working on it. My build slip is my workbench, my kitchen island, a table out on the back porch, etc. I personally wouldn't waste my money on a slip. ;)

Welcome to the forums Mark.
You can get by just fine without a slip. Just have some things you can use to make sure things are square (even lego blocks work good for this) and you'll be fine.
As far as what ship, I would point you toward the Model Expo Shipwright series to get you started. They will teach you many of the methods you will use.
Here is a link to them (no, I'm not paid by them. :) )

As an extra bonus, they have them on a pretty good sale right now. :)

The best advice is to not buy tools untl you actually need them. Ship model dealers are constantly offering tools to make ship modeling easy. As a result many builders wind up with a lot of useless junk. Like the others, I have never planned nor do I intend to buy a building slip. I don’t need one.
