Update: I've started a Build Log.

Do these forum members frown upon scratch builds of artistic (non-historic) model ships?

I drew this ship and now my "Maker" brain is wondering how best to build a model? It was inspired by some cartoony galleon puzzles I seen as a kid in 1980. Add in background lore for a fantastical adventure world and you get a dwarf English galleon with windjammer sails and possibly a catamaran style double hull? (Still deciding the details.) Basically, this is a fantasy world's first cruise liner. The cabins atop the fore and after castles are for paying customers. I love the look, but man, rigging is going to be crazy.

I'm going to rough in the shape with pink insulation foam and then transfer the measurements to a scale drawing. I like to think others might be interested in such a design and so I'd like to make the drawings, but I'm not sure of what views and details are offered in a normal set of model plans?

I'm also not sure of the scale? Initially, I was thinking 1:64 scale to allow compatibility with 28mm miniatures, but it seems the masts are about 3 or 3.5 times the height of stern castle cabins which puts them around 4ft in height. Too tall for my display area. I'll know more about scale after sculpting.

What are some recommendations for a suitable scale?
Please forgive my comical drawings.

THanks for reading.

If you think it’s good, then so do we.

Thank you for the encouraging words. I hope not to disappoint.
Until now, my past ship builds have been as terrain or props in wargaming scenarios. I'm 0 for 3 in my attempts to build a sunken ship that has been refloated atop many rafts. The idea is there, but I don't see the results completely which, for me, means I ill not be happy with the results.
I just don't want to alienate myself by jumping in on an unconventional build.

Looking though these logs has me itching to get started. I just cut the 1" foam blocks (12"x6").

Welcome to SoS
Disney has awed millions and millions of people with their fantasy ships in their parks and their movies.
A hobby is for fun. If realism is important, fine, but if fantasy is more to your liking, go for it.

It's your hobby. Do what makes you feel good inside. Everyone has opinions, but no one says you have to share them.

The key is to be happy with what you're doing, and even if your builds are unconventional, there may be aspects in which we all can benefit. Techniques we use may be of value to you, and what you undertake may be of value to us. Its a win-win for all parties involved.

Hi pwbinde,
Whatever floats your boat so to speak, it's your project enjoy yourself.

Cheers,
Stephen.

What a brilliant idea!

You can make a fusion of fantasy AND plausibility from your own ideas plus some of the techniques commonly used here!

Yes please!!
Thank you! This is a very encouraging community of talented people.
Since my original post, I have thought of a second, less ambitious ship build: a Norse Dwarven inspired vessel similar to the CSS Virginia in design, but with thick, stone armor reinforced by iron banding.
It might be that go-to-project for when I'm feeling a bit frustrated with the Maiden Voyage build?
Anyways, thank you for your enthusiasm. It is quite motivating to me.

And nobody will be able to point out that your cannon are the wrong design, your ropes are not to scale and your belaying pins are anachronistic.
