Hello,

My dad has asked I list his Jim Byrne saw for him. He bought it direct from Jim and had it imported from the US. He has proof of purchase which I can share next week when I’m with him.

We’re not sure how much to sell it for as we’ve struggled to find a comparison to value it. I’ve attached the type of saw it is from the saw listed on eBay without the extra accessories. We’re open to offers or ideas on prices.

He’s based North of York and would prefer collection rather than postage due to the cost and risk of damage.

It’s not been used a lot as he ended up building rocking horses instead of ships. Photos to follow next week.

Any questions please ask.

To add my dads after £1500 if possible? I think this is a reasonable amount but correct me if I’m wrong. Thank you.

I'm afraid the US $4,250 price on eBay as posted above was a fluke. At the time, many believed there would be no more Byrnes saws produced following Jim Byrnes' untimely passing and that example was the larger table top with just about every option one could buy for it. It turns out, if credible reports are to be believed, that Jim's widow, Donna, who ran the business with Jim, now has the production division up and running (although their website seems not as yet to have been updated.) I'm told the new price of the basic "Jim saw" as you've pictured is now US $495, plus tax and shipping, etc. Perhaps your father can let you know what the cost to ship it to the UK with customs duty, etc. was at the time he bought it, or someone in this forum with more recent experience with that can let you know. This will give you an idea of what a reasonable net cost for a new one in the UK would be.

Even a used but well-cared for one will probably bring about the same or at least 75% of the new cost and, considering the shipping and customs, which I believe can run as much as the saw itself, one in the UK should bring quite a bit more than the retail price in the US. Additionally, since I'm told there is already a waiting list for new ones at present, you may even still be able to sell it in the UK for somewhat more than the new retail price plus shipping and customs duties because they are in great demand, albeit to a rather small number of prospective customers. Additionally, I believe there was a slight upcharge for the 220 VAC mains model.

Subsequent to the US $4,250 eBay sale noted above, another standard basic model sold on US eBay for, I believe, US $1,450. You might want to try listing it on the UK eBay at around that price plus a factor for the shipping and customs duties in the UK and see if you can benefit from a "bidding war" before Donna updates the website and there are still those who figure this is their last change to buy one! You never know.

I paid $500 US dollars for mine, and another $500 in shipping cost down here to Australia. I guess the second hand price reflects its scarcity.

Thanks all. We have no idea what to list it for over in the UK as we can’t find any that have sold second hand. He’s not after making a profit etc he just wants it to go for a fair price to someone who’ll just it. Do any UK based people have an idea? Thank you!

If not looking for a profit, I suggest following the other posts direction. Go for 75% of purchase price, add shipping costs, etc. You mentioned you have the original proof of purchase so you have all the info needed to list it. eBay may be your best bet to reach the widest audience possible. Remember, you can set local pickup as an option.

All these variables, voltage, shipping, customs, etc. means that the value of the saw is comparable only to those already landed in Great Britain. I believe that a new saw, if and when available will sell for about $500US, and not knowing what business model will be used for running the reconstituted business, at this point I would rather have a used saw in good condition. Why not start by offering it for $500 +shipping+ customs +Ebay fee, all converted to pounds and see what happens. If any accessories are included, pricing is listed for these on the Byrnes Saw website.

Before monkeying with EBay I would first offer it for sale on this forum. I would also sign up for membership, it’s free, on Model Ship World which has several times as many members. MSW requires 25 posts from a member before they can use their selling feature but you can easily do by just posting favorable comments on 25 build logs. By posting it on these forums you reach a large part of the people who appreciate what a Byrnes Saw is.o

I have just ordered the table saw (230v small model) and the thickness sander, plus several accessories.

For just the table saw and shipping, price is around usd1000 (shipped to Europe). Tax to be added when I receive it.

You can write to Donna Byrnes, using the contact form on the website. They do have a few machines in stock. Payment was through Paypal.
