Although La Pinta is a model that I finished several years ago, I never published it because there are many high-quality versions on the forums and I saw my little boat somewhat diminished; but considering that this is the last day of the year, I present it with my greetings to the fans of naval modeling and that in 2025 we will have peace and health..

La Pinta

1 History
It is not known where or when the Pinta was built, although it has been assumed that it could have been in Palos - Spain. The only sources of information about this ship are the “Historia del Almirante” by Hernando Colón and the “Diario de la primera navegación” compiled by Bartolomé de las Casas. As a ship, the Pinta was a very fast ship, according to Columbus's Diary, so much so that on October 8th, in a competition to be the first to arrive, it reached a speed of 15 miles per hour (a mile at the time is equivalent to 0.8 nautical miles today, so its speed would have reached about 12 knots).

There have been several estimates of the dimensions and shape of this ship. According to Leopoldo Gorostiza, it weighed 40 tons (a value deduced from a passage by Hernando Colón) and from there the author deduces the following measurements: 14.9 m in length, 4.6 m in width and 2.3 m in depth. Another author indicates that it was a Nordic style caravel with dimensions of 5.36 m in width and 17 m in length. For my version that I developed, the hull and rigging are based on a 1:72 plan (author Dusek), some deck details are taken from the Amati model and others from another model (in Russian, without author references).

4 Model construction
From the drawing shown and the hull lines, the sections for the frames, the shape of the deck and the dimensions of the masts were obtained. The frames and main parts were drawn in AutoCAD and laser cut on 4 mm and 1.5 mm plywood sheets. The 2x5 mm strakes that make up the bow and the stern castle were placed, continuing to the keel; then they were sanded and apply a mixture of putty, white glue and sawdust to cover the imperfections. Again, they were sanded until the surface was ready for staining or painting. The hull was painted dark brown and the straps were stained with an aged walnut color. The deck was prepared simulating planking and using 0.5x 5 mm slats that were cut from wood veneers and aged with Judea bitumen.

The gunwale, the transom, and the jib are put in place; on the central deck, the entrance to the hold is closed with a truss. The masts are prepared: main, mizzen and foremast; the yards, mizzen yard and the bowsprit, fixing to them their fixing elements such as fins, cleats, blocks, etc. The bitts, cleats and rigging tables are also prepared. The masts and the bowsprit are mounted and aligned, placing the stays and shrouds with dark thread in 0.8 mm. The sails were prepared with tea-dyed cotton cloth. After painting the cross of the sails, I noticed that it resembles a model of the Templar cross, I think it would have been more appropriate to make the cross with its arrowed ends. All the stays, shrouds and maneuvers are placed.

The rudder and its tiller, sails and rigging were finished. Finally, the anchor and flags were placed, as well as the flag of Isabel de Castilla and Fernando de Aragón, and those of Castilla y León
