Well after finishing my semi - scratch HMS Victory (POB) a couple of years ago I was starting to get a little bored in my retirement. So I have jumped right in at the deep end after seeing so many magnificent arsenal models and decided to build the French Frigate La Venus from the plans published by Ancre. The model is 1:48 and the frames, keel etc are in lovely dark Swiss pear from hobby mill.

Here goes ……..some pictures of work to date.

Yes, having completed all 63 frames, keel, false keel etc I’m at the point where I need to think about putting these parts together for real. Currently doing a bit of research as to the best type/style to make.

If you poke around on the scratch building side of the forum you will see some active builds that might provide some food for thought. You might also look around for a copy of this book: The Art of Ship Modeling (Bernard Frolich). You can get it new from Ancre but it's spendy (especially with shipping, etc.). Perhaps there is a used copy somewhere?

Some examples of active builds:

There is also a link in my signature below to my stern section model, but the scope of that project is limited compared to yours.

I'm new and learning so I'll pull up a chair. Looking forward to your build.

Hi Tobias, yes I am aware that there are some errors in the plan set from Ancre and will try my best to sort the mistakes as and when I come to fitting. I think this will undoubtably mean some rework!!!

Hi Jon!

Very nice progress so far, and I'm following your build with great interest. I hope you enjoy building the Venus, despite the anomalies in the plans.
My build log of the Venus in 1:72 scale is unfortunately only available on the neighboring forum www.segelschiffsmodellbau.com

If you have any questions, feel free to contact me anytime, and I'll be happy to help.

Best regards,
Andreas

Many thanks, I’ll definitely be checking out your build. I haven’t been able to find too many model shipwrights on line who have attempted La Venus…..maybe I’ll find out why as the build progresses!!!!

Jon

Hi, great work, it looks well done. It's true that Venus are rarely seen in construction logs. I'll keep an eye on it.

Miguel.
