L'Amarante 1747 from ANCRE monograph in 1:36 - by Bill-R

Hello everyone,

I've been getting material and information for my upcoming build. A while back, I seem to remember someone suggesting a rigging book for 17th or 18th century French Corvette's. Does anyone recall a book of that subject, or am I loosing my mind.

Thanks in advance,

Bill
Hallo Bill,
take a look at this list of books related to rigging

Hello Tobias and Uwe,

Thanks for the help. It could very well be the book "Rigging of Period Ship Models" by Lennarth Petersson. For some reason I was thinking the title referenced French Warships, but I am not sure at all.

Thanks
Bill

Hello everyone,

It’s hard to believe that it has been three years since I first started this post. At that time I had grand plans to build the L’Amarante. As I moved forward, I realized that my skills did not measure up to my ambition. I find it somewhat embarrassing to re-read my posts. Never the less, I have not given up the idea of building the L’Amarante. Being a member of this great group has helped me to improve my skills greatly. I still consider myself a beginner at ship building, but I am getting better. I greatly appreciate all of the help and guidance I have received over the time I have been.

So I have been planning to restart my plans for the L’Amarante. The most important consideration I made was the size of the ship. The original plans are 1:36 scale. Over time I have come to realize that this is too large of a ship for me to build in my shop. Also, I will no place to display a ship of that size. That being said, I have ordered and received the 1:48 scale plans from ANCRE. As in the past, I have received great fast service from ANCRE. At this scale, the hull will be about 56cm. That will be a more manageable size for me. I have a good supply of cherry wood, but I will need the get some additional wood.

I am still going to be building my Charles Morgan in conjunction with the L’Amarante. I am retired, but my wife still works full time. This gives me lots of free time.

As you can see from the picture posted below, the 1:36 scale version is (to me) a very large model. I think at 1:48 scale it will be a much more manageable project.

Hi Bill , if you allow me a piece of advice, Thank you , in my opinion it is not enough just the monograph I would also recommend you the volumes of 74 cannons as a real guide.Frank

Hello Frank,

Thanks for the suggestion. I will definitely look into that book. I have gotten the two books below from ANCRE and have found them to be two of the best books I have ever seen on model ship building. They are truly amazing.

Hi Bill,

I have to agree on this point. Sorolla, in particular, is very approachable. Frolich requires some considerable experience to follow, but once I get my brain wrapped around what he is saying I find his work very helpful.

There are several excellent build reports available on this ship (and a sister ship) that you should check out as well!

Hi Paul,

I agree 100%. It took me a will to grasp information Frolich was presenting, but once I did understand, the information is priceless. I also found the same problem with understanding the ship plans. It took me a while to understand what I was looking at.

Bill
