Larger ships?

In Peter Goodwin's "English Man of War" on page 135 he's talking about quadrants. He says that the quadrant was only used in larger ships. That's a bit vague. Can someone give me a tonnage or some other clue as to what might qualify as a "larger ship". He uses that term in more than one spot and it leaves me wondering, is my Discovery1789 at 300 tons considered a "larger ship"? Compared to the Victory's 2000 ton I would guess it is but who knows.
