I am just getting back into ship model building after many-many years away. I have noticed that most models now are of laser-cut type construction. I am about ready to order one of these kits from Model Expo and have questions/ concerns about this method. In the past, I have always built solid hull models so I am new to laser-cut parts..

Being in my late 80's (no spring chicken), my hands and fingers are not as agile as in earlier years and am wondering how this works. How do you get the parts out of the wood it comes in. Can you just push them out or do you have to cut them from the wood? I am concerned I might damage some parts while getting them ready for constriction. I am seriously considering building Model Expo's (Model Shipways) Bluenose kit soon so would appreciate input about Laser-cut parts before I make the commitment.

Thanks,
Jim L

Most of these laser cut wood pieces have 99 percent of part cut out, with one - three small (1/8') tabs still holding the part attached to the wood sheet.

A good exacto knife can cut thru easy or a few use narrow flat blade knife and tap with hammer to cut thru harder woods.

The building of "Plank on bulkhead" models isn't much more difficult than solid hull, as you don't have to carve the hull to final shape.

Gluing up the frames, and then sanding needed angles on front and aft bulkheads before adding the planking.

I find most difficult part ensuring bulkheads are glued square to keep, but using large Lego blocks or other items to keep then inline is very easy to do. Some modelers use scrap wood strip run along top outside edge to keep them square till deck or planks are started.

Use You tube to check out videos on kits, or check here with Search function to see others build logs on what they have done.

Please start a new build log so we can follow along and then give advise or help if needed. We are all family here to help each other.

I'm 76, like yourself always built solid hull kits. However, I have stayed with the hobby throughout my adult life. Recently I built my first laser cut kit, Model Shipways Dory (built a diorama). Unlike when we were growing up and parts were basically stamped outlines that you had to cut out, these parts are easily removed. Just use your basic Exacto to cut the tabs and push out. After removing, just some light sanding to clean and smooth the surface, it's important to remove the laser burn.

Welcome back!
