Libertyship Jeremiah O'Brien (Trumpeter/Eduard 1:350)

Gijsbert,
I have the Trumpeter 1/700 John Brown, with Tom's Modelworks PE to go with it. I intend to set it in a seascape, with all the derricks stowed, as they would be. Are you intending to have a barge alongside, working cargo? I've thought about doing something similar, but I prefer to model ships underway. I'll be following your progress with interest
Dave
ps - hope you have avoided the lousy flooding!

Hi Dave, I have taken a pause in modeling for a couple of months, too many jobs to be done around the house, so it will be in the wintertime that I will resume building, next to being a brand-new granddaddy (I hope!)
The idea is to make a diorama like the situation on the Normandy beaches after D-Day.

Thankfully we had no flooding here in our street, but in our region things have really gone bad (like Valkenburg) :-(

This Photo Etch stuff is really something... I happen to have a little WiFi microscope and that really helps me in judging my work. It is not so easy to use with the construction, because it is 2D and it is very hard to judge how far you are from the surface, but nice to look at the results. And you really see where you have to improve!!!

The thing I am building now is a chamber that supports the loading installation and it contains the steam lines from the engine room.
On the stern side there are two doors with a rain protection and on the other side the connection of the steampipes with the winches. Also some of the hose reels and a ladder and on the sides two holders with lifebuoys, sorry for my poor English :-( .

With the microscope it is really visible that:
. the ladder is not bent symmetrical left and right
. the ladder is too high (which explained why it did not glue on the side above)
. the connection boxes are not bent in the same direction

Okay, I don't mind so very much, it is really so very small and I don't think that you will ever notice it in the end, but it teaches me where to improve and where to hone my skills. I keep being amazed how small everything is!!!
I still need to put more PE-parts to this little assembly of not even 2 cm long!

Very nice work so far. :)

Hello all,

After finishing the Japanese Byodoin temple, I was looking for something very different. So I wanted to do more with weathering and I was looking for a plastic kit from a merchant ship which I could make really scuffy and battered. There are not so many kits from civil freighters, but I found the Jeremiah O'Brien also a very intriguing ship with an interesting history (Check here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SS_Jeremiah_O'Brien)

So I ordered it and I am now waiting anxiously at home to start.

Here are some pictures of the Jeremiah O'Brien and some other original pictures of liberty ships during wartime.

Enough to get me inspired and challenged to do something completely different and new for me...

Hallo @Gijsbert
we wish you all the BEST and a HAPPY BIRTHDAY

I have seen Jeremiah O’Brien twice. Once when she was sailing into Charleston Harbor in South Carolina, Or she was escorted by World War II Navy aircraft, and then again I visited her at fisherman‘s wharf in San Francisco California. My only link to liberty ships besides the wonderful history of them is that my father sailed on a liberty ship from Patras Greece to Baltimore Maryland Stopping in the United States In the early 1950s. This liberty ship had been converted to a cargo ship And was under Liberian flag. They weathered a terrible storm coming over. And my father always meant noted that it was a very rocky voyage. I’m going to look into my files and see if I have some pictures of the O’Briens deck as well as her Bridge area/engine room etc. That is if you are interested.

I always found one of the most interesting details on the Liberty ships to be a potato bin on the main deck...this part is represented in PE by I believe GMM. Happy building! Bob

I remember seeing the O'Brien moored up in San Fran harbour many years ago. I'm considering adding this kit to my stash, and will follow your build with interest. Would be keen to hear your overall opinion of the kit and the PE you used. Good luck, she's already looking good. :)
