I would like to build a wood model of the Texas Navy Ship AUSTIN ca. 1843. I can't find a specific kit for it but I found a few I think I could modify. I was wondering if anyone has any thoughts on the following kits. Not concerned about accuracy of the kit to its namesake, just assembly and parts quality. Also open to others that might resemble the Austin.
1/75 Mamoli HMS Surprise
1/75 ZHL HMS Surprise
1/60 ZHL HMS Kingfisher

I built plastic models of Cutty Sark and USS Constitution with full rigging many years ago and have built many scale RC aircraft from kits, plans and drawings (scratch) recently so I have tools and some skill/experience but have not built a planked wood ship model before. I normally work with balsa, basswood, plywood and bamboo. What's the difference between pear and beech for model building?
Here are a sketch from a crew member of TNS Austin and a painting for reference. Thanks!TNS Austin sketch.jpeg

A quick search - I found these: And do an Advanced Search at the top of the Ships of Scale home and enter AUSTIN. it will take you to the pages below where a model of the Austin was built. Its a great compendium of a build of that ship. Offers suggestions too of other research you might be interested in. 2025-02-11 (1).png2025-02-11 (2).png

Phil, Thanks, I've read Polydoc's build log of his scratch built Austin. His pics are what I'll be using to make my changes. As he notes, there are no shipyard drawings of Austin so it's a lot of conjecture.
I don't think the one from Stephans and Kenau is a kit. I think they are offering a completed model which doesn't look like Austin with the side galleries.

I noticed he referenced the USS Germantown 1843 as a similar ship and there is also build log for that model too. And I believe you are correct ax to the other model - probably expensive and not a kit.
