M/S Gun Boat Philadelphia [COMPLETED BUILD]

Hi All, More progress on the GUNBOAT, the anchors lashed in place( think i made a mistake in asembling the anchors the plans show the anchor stocks lashed vertically, and the shank horizantly no way could i get that the way i asembled the anchors, looked at different models and some had it done like i did it, also the fore rails done, the stub mast is drying using GEL STAIN BLACK, do not know if i am going to like it, now for the awning structure, and the rudder and tiller, Do to the nature of the structure i have to stain the beams individually because they are to alike and i will get them mixed up, have to use a lap joint with the beams to the stations, as always comments and critisims always welcome20190604_222749[5325].jpg20190604_222949[5324].jpg20190604_223051[5323].jpg

Definitely the anchor stock hast to be 90 digreese turnend installed..... otherwise the anchor would not work at the seabed
Google admiralty anchor or stock anchor.......

...as you are entered the world of scratch build models -nothing should be impossible. I am sure, you can build a new one out of existing, all you have to do is to twist anchor stock 45 degrees, else, just made a new one. If you leave it like this, it will be an eye-catching blemish. I am voting for re-do, are you with me?
 
Hi Jim, I am trying to make a new one, MY PROBLEM IS THE RIGGING of the anchors, it took me quite some time to do the rigging and I am quite pleased with the way it came out as DON AND RIGGING IS LIKE DON AND PAINT WE DO NOT LIKE EACH OTHER, also the ropes and anchors are glued using CA I can remove it as I AM AN EXPERT AT REDOING, but again the ropes are the problem but will try, in the mean time will contiue with the awning assembly witch is at the stern section of the ship and will not interfere with the anchors, another thought is to show the anchors off the rails but hanging at the sides like they are being set, just a thought, what do you think. Don
 
I think whether you will show anchors stowed or hanging ready, they must have some surgery, ...and not to mention, it is missing some parts: on the stock it missing hoops, on the anchor itself it missing palm (flukes). See the photo below

more on the gun boat, this is preparing rudder and tiller assembly, the instructions call for drilling two small holes and working the mortice with chisels and files, found a better way got this from the instructions on the flattie, cut the middle out of tiller reistall i used 2 pieces of cherry glued to the tiller showing how it turned out putting the mortice to the rudder, i think it came out OK. more on the gunboat, nearing completion, the awning structure complete, the stern section of the awning structure was compicated to me had a lot of do overs, turned out OK not perfect but OK, left to do is the OARS, the OARS STORAGE, the RUDDER and TILLER, will make the rudder up but not install it until i mount the model on its base, do not want to break it, will give my opion of the kit in my next post GOING ONTO THE BLANDFORD, and by midweek start posting on the LE ROCHEFORT20190616_011434[5776].jpg20190616_011530[5775].jpg20190616_011639[5774].jpg20190616_011742[5773].jpg

Hi Mike, At soon to be 82 years old, and not able to drive any more, for the last 7 years, and have no interests in TV, I model almost every day, I am so slow that if I did not I would never finish a model. THANKS Don
 
Hi Don, my comment was meant as a joke, I will be 79 in April and have a lot of the same problems you do.
When I am not doing yard work or house maintenance, I am working on model ships also.
You are making a lot of progress with your modeling, as you gain experience reading drawings will be easier taking less time and there will less re-working parts to make them fit.
Remember this is a hobby not a race if you stay with it you will finish the model.
 
, I know it was meant as a joke LOL, with the help of many members of SOS help including yours I am progresing quite well, and have been bitten by the DARK SIDE, the LE ROCHEFORT is again a learning experience for me, the only thing I am NOT HAPPY ABOUT IS MY FRAMES are not turning out like I would hope, have tried a lot of different methods, the one I am using now is better but still not where I would like it to be, maybe with the the disk sander I am getting it will be a help in doing the angles on the frames, AGAIN THANKS FOR ALL THE HELP. Don
 
Don: I think a disk sander will help a lot. I NEVER rely on the scroll saw to cut the flat joints between the futtocks on the frames. I always cut the parts long and use the sander to sand true to the line and dead flat.
 
Enjoyed reading your build log, Don. I accidentally came across this kit while thinking about what my next build might be. Currently, Model Expo has the kit on sale (on their website under Hidden Gems.) Having been raised in northern NY state, not far from Lake Champlain and being interested in US naval ships, this one really has my eye. It would be my 1st plank on bulkhead build; but having just finished the USS Constitution X-Section, I have the confidence to tackle this project.
