Making Cannon

Hi Allan,

I am trying to find out when the transition from vent to gun lock took place with the background of what firing form the guns on the 1742 Granado had. Do you have some informations about that?

thanks

Dirk

Hi Dirk
From what little I can find, Brian Lavery wrote in The Arming and Fitting of English Ships of War, page 143, that the first attempts at using locks was in the 1750's on guns on the quarter deck and forecastle. There were problems as with most innovations so did not become standard until the 1770s. His information is shown as coming from the Public Records Office. Based on these dates, Granado would not have had locks when launched. She might have been re-armed or had the guns modified before she was converted to a whaling ship in 1775.

slowly ... slowly ......
trying something different (for me). I took your drawing of the 32 pounder and took it into Fusion 360. From which I created a 3D version of the cannon barrel. Then, from there, I exported as an STL 3D file and finally, printed it on my 3D printer. 2 inch length to start. A lot more to do. The breech, carriage and hardware. I am trying to see if I can accurately make a model of a cannon with included detail. I am posting pictures for your viewing....note this barrel does not yet have the trunnions installed2025-02-22 (1).png2025-02-22.pngcanon profile 2.jpg20250222_161315.jpg20250222_161320.jpg

In thread #163 I posted a 3D model of the barrel and the carriage with slides
please see if it can be useful to you
please also look at threads #118 and 119

P.S. I am glad you like this ordnance

Another of my models to add to this discussion. 1866 muzzle loading 80pr Armstrong. Rifled.
Based on originals still existing at Port Fairy and Warrnambool, Victoria, Australia. 1:10 scale. Scratch built model.
Sights were added since these photos were taken.
The last 4 photos show the gun in the loading and firing positions.
No, it cannot be fired. No vent.

Thankyou Allan. I made this one because I had access to several original guns not too far from where I live.
The garrison gun carriage is very similar to that of the Monk pattern of Fort Nelson
My compliments for the accuracy of the life-size reliefs , and their realization in the model
Unfortunately near my country there are no old ordnance , the near , and not very old (WWI) is that of Cresta Croce on the Adamello glacier

I'm trying to avoid modelling garrison pieces, though I've been tempted to do the Rodmans that armed Fort McHenry in Baltimore. That's pure nostalgia from when I played at the fort as a kid. I've managed to resist that urge, so far.
I am still working on a display of one-each of all the guns Constellation carried from 1854 to present. That project is stuck on the iron carriage for the 11 inch Dahlgren she mounted on the gundeck for a few years.
