Model Shipways Kit No. MS1417 Dory, Pram and Smack

I have come this far. Broke and repaired a number of pieces in the process…. I am glad this model will be painted because this will cover many flaws.

Seriously, this has been a challenge, mainly because of the size and delicacy of the model. I am keen to get it finished this weekend since next week is going to be busy and I won’t have time to work on this.

It’s looking great , remember go slow, look at the other build threads, I’d link mine but not sure how to do it!
Yes the pram is planked differently, also check out my other build thread! You will see the difference!the lobster smack is also planked differently than the previous ones, but more similar to the bigger ships you’ll find yourself wanting to build as you progress!
Good luck we’re all here to help and support!
Remember what’s more important is to enjoy the journey it’s not a race and build to please yourself and no one else!

I started building ship models with no real knowledge of the craft. I built the Billing Boats St. Roch, and to my surprise it turned out rather well - it challenged both my mental and physical skills and the end result surprised me. Virtually no instructions are provided with this kit so I had to make up everything as I went along and I used the build logs from SOS extensively. When I looked to see what was available to build next, the Model Shipways kit with the Dory, Pram and Smack was suggested by an SOS member. It was also suggested that I post a build log for this.

It took a long time to get hold of this kit. I bought it from Great Hobbies in Toronto where in mid November it was on back order. I received it on January 6, 2023.

Looking at this kit I realize I made the right choice. There are good instructions which will teach me techniques that I should have known about when I started the St. Roch. Three instruction booklets are provided, one for each model, and each contains step by step instructions and colour illustrations. The dory is a kit for beginners which is where I should have started in the first place!! The kit also provides some of the tools that are required.

Here are some comments on the dory build.
I found the small size of the pieces and the overall model to be very challenging in my clumsy hands and fingers. Smaller hands would be an advantage! Trying to shape some of the small pieces without breaking them was difficult. But I was able to fix the bits I broke and move on. I also developed my sanding skills - although the oars aren't perfect, I didn't think I would be able to shape them at all without creating a pile of matchsticks.

I have moved on to the Pram build.

when I was about 12 (1968?) my dad bought me a plastic model of the USS Constitution. (Revel?) I built it, but it came w/o sails, etc. So I called the company and ordered the sails. Anyway, that was plastic, but I’m loving working with the wood. Did the Dory, I’m now working on the next step. The Pram

I joined up with SOS when I ran into trouble building the Billings model St Roch. This was first serious attempt at model ship building. I received good advice and very friendly reactions. After finishing this model I decided that it was time to actually learn some basics so I built the dory and then the pram. The advantages of building these were that they didn’t take too long to build and I learned many of the skills I should have had when I tackled the St Roch. I have not built the lobster smack yet, having been distracted by other kits. You have made a good choice sighting up with SOS.

You should post a few pictures of your dory.

Looking good! I finished my Dory and have started on the pram also. I think building these in sequence really helps you learn new techniques and how to handle small wood parts. Model-expo has done a great job!

The full line from beginners to top level kits from Model Shipways are good kits. I have found great instructions and parts, and good customer service.

I believe some of the delays may have been due to the company moving to new facility late last year.

Please do a build log, and we will all watch as you go, and remember if you have a question or problem, just post it in the build log and someone will normally be able to provide help to you.
I’m new here. How do you do a build log?

Look up the below thread on how to create build logs and post photos.

The home page has lots of good forums on the how to of the hobby.
