Hi Guys,

Firstly before I start this build log I want to say a very big thank you to our member Rsj who has made this build possible by giving me the plans and instructions for the Mantra 1:200 scale HMS Victory that he had built and has done a fantastic job in doing so.

Thank you very much Rsj.

I know there are a lot of excellent HMS Victory build logs on this site so I hope you would not mind one more.

I will be using all the other build logs that have been posted by our great member for reference, and no doubt I will have a few questions at some point in time.

I must say from the start that this model will be scratch built using whatever materials I can find and modified accordingly as I go along.
My style of model making is to try and make a model that is pleasing to the eye.
I do not expect it to be true to the original ship or even as detailed but I hope to make a reasonably representation of this ship.

Normally my builds are in advanced of the build log but as I am unsure as to what I am doing so I will post as I go.
This build will take a while as every thing will be made from scratch and by hand.
So enough waffling.

Now to start the log.

The first thing was to scan the frames and keel sheet and then print them out and glue them to a sheet of 5mm plywood that was the back of a piece of furniture.
(I think the kit used 3mm Plywood.)

Hi Guys,

It has been a good day today.
The weather is nice dry and sonny so I got quite a lot done whilst being outside.
Using a hand fretsaw I cut out the frames and keel pieces and sand them all.

Due to the different thickness of the 5mm plywood instead of the 3mm I had to file out the slots to enable each part to fit together snuggly.
This is not a very good quality plywood as bits keep chipping out, but luckily it wont be seen.

Each frame was dry fitted until I had made and fitted the piece they call a longeron ! in the instruction manual. (the stiffener in the centre of the hull.)
Then the assembly was fitted to the keel and glued in place.

The four transom pieces were then cut out and fitted.

The entire hull was then sanded and forward and aft sections tapered to aid the curves for the planking.

I included a tape measure to give you an idea of the size of this 1:200 scale HMS Victory.

Look forward to following your new build of the Victory. You are off to a great start! Magic Mike
Hi Magic Mike,
Welcome to this log, I hope you enjoy it,
My stile/approach to making my models is a little different.
I tend to make them for enjoyment rather than accuracy in the hope that each one will be better then the last and maybe eventually I will be as good as the skilful members here.

Hi Guys,

The next job was to find something to use for the deck sections.
Lucky I had some offcuts of 1.5mm ply from an old heavy duty folder.
Using the plans I marked out the decks planking and measured and marked out the 2mm deck planks using a pencil.
Then gave the decks just one coat of wood stain and then wiped it off immediately leaving a light staining so that the decks do not look new.

Hi Guys,

I raided my spares box for the grating wood.
Assembled and fitted a darker wood strip around the outside edges.
Then sanded down the thickness unfortunately I could not sand it down thin enough without it breaking so on my third attempt I had to settle for about 1.5mm.

With some 2 x 5 mm thin strip wood I then made what looks like some hatch doors, again sanding down the thickness.
Fitted these to the lower weather deck.
Made some beams to go across the deck opening.

Cut and fitted the first piece of the transom.
Added a small false deck and the ladder from the main deck.

Hi Guys,

At this stage of the build I have to ignore the instructions as I do not have the correct material required.
From now on I will only use the instruction manual as a rough guide.

So on to the fun part ‘planking the hull’

There is no need to describe this to you guys as you know what fun this can be LOL!!
I got the majority of the Hull planking on so I decided to coat the wood with a 50/50 mix of white wood glue and water and left overnight to dry.
I made good progress yesterday evening so decided to get up early to continue with the planking today.

Roughly sanded it down so that I could see where filler would be needed.

Hi Guys,

Still working on the hull, due to the lack of the correct materials I had to glue some strips of wood together to make some thin sheets,
this I had done slightly in advanced whilst waiting for some of the planking to adhere to the frames.20221014_084217.jpg20221014_132208.jpg20221014_135417.jpg
As I do not have a Lathe or a drill I will not be making 102 cannons so I will be closing up most of the gunport's.

(My excuse is that I think she would only show her cannons when in battle)

A few more strips added.

A little filling and sanding and it is starting to look like a ship.
