My model

Good luck with that endeavor. A very worthy undertaking! It does look as though it’s sailed through a volcanic plume. Please post updates as you go.

Thanks and I will, and if you know of anyone in my area that can help me with this please let me know.

Welcome aboard! Would love to see progress on restoring this ship.

Hello, Jim. I live in Salt Lake and started building just a few years ago. I’m afraid though that I haven’t worked on a restoration and might not be (probably won’t be) much help. However if I can in any way, or if you need some of the tools or materials, I’d be happy to share. Best wishes in preserving such a wonderful and sentimental piece. -Michael

Welcome form Oklahoma, glad to see a nice model preserved.

You might look at getting a soft brush and vacuum and start lightly dusting off as much as possible to see what is underneath as this ship looks well done.

Welcome to the SOS group. You have an interesting project, and as a family heirloom I know you want to do your very best in restoring it. Over the past several years I have been asked to restore a few very old and damaged models. Rather than spending several hours/days on research to get the perfect rigging details I've always concentrated on good cleaning and an attempt to rebuild the model as the original builder had intended. I never felt that I had the right to change any aspects of the model even though I knew it wasn't right. I know the original builder or family member did the best they could and were proud of what they accomplished. If certain aspects of the model (eg. rigging) were missing completely then yes, I would rebuild according to research.
Jim
